Mohammedan

For years the chief figure in the National Congress was G.K. Gokhale, a Hindu who with a temperate but determined spirit fought for the gradual emancipation of India.

Long after the Hindus had become aroused, the 60 million Mohammedans of India remained inert and inarticulate, for they seemed to be a minority which could hardly join forces with the Hindu nationalists, nor claim separate nationality for themselves.

But in due time the Mohammedans bestirred themselves and in 1912 founded a Muslim League, which held annual meetings like those of the National Congress, and like the Congress criticized British despotism.

The two movements were brought into alliance in 1916, during the Great War, which indirectly gave tremendous impetus to the demand for self-government in India, as in every other subject country.

In 1916 the two organizations agreed to make a joint demand for representative government, in 1918 for complete self-government to be achieved by degrees within the next 15 years.

Thus Mohammedans and Hindus and Europeans, though they live in the same block, must vote separately as if in different electoral districts.

Before eighteen eighty-four, Portugal held a long but vaguely defined strip of malarial coastland on both sides of the Zambezi River, which enters the sea just opposite the great island of Madagascar.

All north of this Portuguese colony of Mozambique was eligible for conquest, since it belonged to no European power, but was claimed by a Muhammadan sultan who, from his capital on the island of Zanzibar, a little below the equator, attempted rather unsuccessfully to assert authority over more than a thousand miles of the mainland coast.

On one occasion, eighteen seventy-seven, the sultan had offered to let William Mackinnon, a very God-fearing Scottish ship owner, collect all the customs duties in this empire.

But the British Foreign Office had vetoed the project.

Against this Egyptian aggression, hot resentment was cherished by Arab slave traders whose profitable business was destroyed by the edicts of English and German adventurers employed as officials by Egypt.

Taxes, too, were levied with a rigor that could not fail to provoke rebellion.

In such fertile soil, the seeds of religious fanaticism were sowed by Muhammad Ahmed, who claimed to be the divinely inspired Mahdi, guide, appointed to revive Muhammadanism and expel European and Egyptian.

With followers called Dervishes, recruited from the natives but chiefly from Arab tribesmen, the Mahdi in eighteen eighty-one began his career of conquest.

The prophet turned the Arab tribes for the nuns into the Muslim people, filled them with the fervor of martyrs, and added to the greed of plunder the nobler ambition of bringing all mankind to the knowledge of the truth.

Before Mohammed died, he was master of Arabia, and the united tribes who had embraced the Muslim or Mohammedan faith were already spreading over the neighboring lands and subduing the astonished nations.

Under his successors, the caliphs, the armies of Muslims overran Persia and Egypt and North Africa as far as the Pillars of Hercules, and the muezzins chant the call to prayer to the faithful over all the land from the river Oxus in Central Asia to the shores of the Atlantic Ocean.

The Mohammedans or Saracens, a word which means Easterns, were checked in Asia Minor by the forces of the Greek emperor, and it was not till the 15th century that they at last obtained the long-coveted possession of Constantinople by the valor of the Ottoman Turks.

So too, at the opposite extremity of the Mediterranean, it was an officer of the Greek emperor who for a while held the Arab advance in check.

The conquerors swept over the province of North Africa and after a long struggle reduced the turbulent Berber tribes for a while to submission, till only the fortress of Ceuta held out against them.

They expect the second field of Gadelete and look to see fair France their prey from Calais to Marseilles.

An issue momentous for Europe was to be decided, and the conflict that ensued has rightly been numbered among the fifteen decisive battles of the world.

The local governments, Zemstvoes, have appointed 26 women doctors in the larger cities, 21 in the smaller, and 55 in the rural districts.

There are 18 women doctors employed in private hospitals on country estates, eight in hospitals for Mohammedan women, 16 in schools, nine in factories, four are employed by railroads, four by the Red Cross Society, etc.

The practice of the woman doctor in the country is naturally the most difficult and the least remunerative.

Therefore, it is willingly given over to the women.

A special Congress on the education of women will be held in the autumn of 1909.

Since the revolution of 1905, the women of the provinces have been astir.

It has been reported that the Mohammedan women of the Caucasus are discarding their veils, that the Russian women in the rural districts are petitioning for greater privileges, etc.

An organized woman's rights movement has originated in the Baltic provinces.

Not only would Richard have been ceding much of the territory he had conquered, but it would have created an autonomous state for Al-Adil to be free from Saladin's rule.

And once Richard left the Holy Land with his army, there's nothing to prevent Al-Adil from dismissing or divorcing Eleanor, and then in true Mohammedan fashion continuing the enslaving of Christian pilgrims, pillaging churches, and reconquering the undefended Christian lands.

Another Arab source, which is likely the most accurate, places this proposal, coming from Al-Adil, to which Richard rejected.

And so, while Eleanor was not married off into a Mohammedan sultan's harem, she was contracted into other proposals, and while still a child.

At the age of nine, as part of a ransom to free Richard, who had been captured by the Holy Roman Emperor, Eleanor was engaged to Frederick, the son of Leopold V, the Duke of Austria.

She was sent from England, but after making it as far as Germany, the Duke suddenly died, and she was then freed from the proposed marriage, as Frederick apparently had no great interest in the arrangement.

Some of these kingdoms had only a short history, but the emperor at Constantinople was never able to regain more than parts of Italy and Spain and the north coast of Africa.

In the 7th century, a new political religion, Mohammedanism, arose in Asia, and the emperors were called upon to struggle for the very existence of their empire against the Moslems.

Between the years 632 and 709, these new enemies conquered Syria, Persia, Egypt, and North Africa, and were only with great difficulty driven back from Constantinople itself.

From Africa, the Saracens crossed to Spain, and by 713 they made themselves masters of the peninsula.

He had traveled far in order to carry the story of Jesus and his love into heathen lands, but here among the followers of the false prophet none would listen to his tale.

Even now, as he sat beneath the palm tree, the spires of the Mohammedan mosques gleamed white in the distance, and he could hear the voices of the priests as they chanted their even-song.

However can I serve my master in such a land as this? exclaimed the holy man.

All around me seems to brood the spell of an unholy influence.

Another version makes him to have been sent on purpose for this book, which was jealously guarded by its Indian possessors, and to have obtained it only by surreptitious means.

Two centuries later, the first Arabic version was made by a Persian named Rusbeh, who was converted to Mohammedanism and took the name Abdullah Ibn Al-Muqaffa.

His translation of these fables is in the East usually called the Book of Kalila and Dimna, from the names of two jackals who act a conspicuous part in the first story.

This Arabic version is the parent of all successive ones.
