La maggior parte di loro erano abitanti di villaggi e agricoltori che si erano avvicinati troppo all'habitat naturale di questi animali solari.

So, you know, this demand actually started since 2021, '22, where they specifically, both, uh, United Naga Council and, uh, Meitei civil society groups like the COCOMI, they started demanding that there should be a, you know, National Register of Citizens exercise done in Manipur.

And this was largely sort of understood to be directed towards the Kuki-Zomi population because both the Nagas and Meiteis argued that, you know, since the conflict in Myanmar and the fighting that started in the Chin State, people who share ethnic similarities with the Kuki-Zomi populations across the border in India, and they are both in Mizoram and Manipur.

So a large number of them have sort of, you know, escaped the country, basically escaping persecution and come.

Some of them are living in shelters in Mizoram, but many in Manipur, you know, have established their own villages and, you know, they're living as citizens, so these people should be identified and, you know, sort of sent back or at least, you know, identified and given shelter like a refugee rather than, you know, staying there as citizens.

And of course, when we talk about this point, this is a fault line that runs quite deep between the Meiteis and the Kukis, right? Because, like you mentioned, Kuki-Zomis share their ethnicity with the people in Myanmar.

So the problem is not just a 2021, '22 problem.

But in the name of the unity and integrity of India, they impose such acts and use them to detain people.

You know that in 1947, two Christian majority states, Nagaland and Mizoram, were crushed by the armed forces in the name of unity and integrity.

Now they are crushing Kashmir and Punjab.

We appeal to the international community to pressurize the Indian government to incorporate the right to self-determination in the Indian constitution so that the people who want to exercise this right are not called secessionists and booked under TADA.
