They stockpiled tear gas.

"Viola." Now, while Monmouth was growing into one of Natchez's finest homes, Quitman's own career was expanding just as rapidly.

He served in the Mississippi Legislature and became Speaker of the House.

Later served as a judge and developed a reputation as one of the state's most capable political leaders.

But it was war that would make him famous.
