Amar AyyashGUEST
11:45
This has become a pretty exciting time to see these things because in the last couple decades, we've seen an influx of both European common gull and Kamchatka common gull on the Atlantic, mainly in New England down to, like, New York, I want to say.
Amar AyyashGUEST
12:03
Um, and Short-billed gull at the same time is now being recorded with more frequency east of the Mississippi River.
Amar AyyashGUEST
12:11
So there's kind of this convergence of Old World taxa and Short-billed gull being found east of the Mississippi River and, um- It's an exciting time to be looking through ring-billed flocks because-

[laughs]
Amar AyyashGUEST

... that's typically where we're finding them.
Bob LabriolaHOST
20:31
Well, everybody needs to be counting the two in their head and you got to hope that everybody's counting at the same pace.
Bob LabriolaHOST
20:38
Um, You know, it's not like when we were kids playing touch football in the street, you know, three Mississippis, and then you could rush the passer.
Bob LabriolaHOST
20:47
Well, some kids were really good with getting those S's and P's out of their mouth quicker than others.
Bob LabriolaHOST
20:54
So, you know, one Mississippi, the length or two Mississippi, three Mississippi, some kids could say that faster than others.
Albert ChengHOST
4:51
And you know, as much as we wanna try to shut that out of the classroom door, it always, you know, rears its head.
Albert ChengHOST
4:57
[laughs] And by the way, a- actually when you were talking there, it kind of reminded me I think of an article we talked about a few months ago about Mississippi, about how one school district went above and beyond trying to track down students that stopped showing up.
Albert ChengHOST
5:09
You know, so they were actively, in addition to improving literacy rates and with good instruction, doing that kind of human work.
Albert ChengHOST
5:17
So I wanna acknowledge to your point that this is an important issue.

I wouldn't want to be nowhere else but here," end quote, Huck says to Jim in chapter nine.
speaker_3HOST
24:03
Would you discuss Huck and Jim's relationship early on? You've mentioned a few of these things, the fog, the dream, trick episode in chapter 15, and the significance of their time together on the Mississippi River in raft compared to life on the land.
Jocelyn ChadwickGUEST
24:19
I'm glad you mentioned that section because it's a very important section.
Julia Ann Dudley NajiebHOST

And, um, this has been some heavy news over the last couple of days, uh, literally.
Julia Ann Dudley NajiebHOST
6:20
If you cross the Mississippi River on the Huey P.

Long, um, Oklahoma Allen Bridge, past the Exxon refinery, then head north for a few mi- few mi- minutes, you'll find a pocket of Loui- Louisiana that's unlike any other place in America.
Julia Ann Dudley NajiebHOST

I'll have to visit to this un- this place that they're talking about, um, because what it means to have equal representation, it's never-ending battle of not having equal representation, what we're talking about.

Matthew CollerHOST
34:57
That's where the second half was much better.
Matthew CollerHOST
34:59
But there was a lot of one Mississippi, two Mississippi, three, like Kyler, are we gonna do something with the football here? And there were some times where the pass protection held up, and there were other times where he took sacks.
Matthew CollerHOST
35:13
And I did think, even though I would give credit to some of the throwaways, and I always try to freeze the tape when someone throws the ball away and try to look like, was there anything? Even if he didn't see it, even if he's not looking that direction, and there were a couple times there might have been, but it's also down the field, and you think it's probably better to throw it away.
Matthew CollerHOST
35:34
But still, when you have this many throwaways, that's going to kill a lot of drives.
Mike BrasherGUEST
28:25
They actually fell by 11% in the traditional survey area this year.
Mike BrasherGUEST
28:29
So the Fish and Wildlife Service is again going to recommend a nine-day early teal season for eligible states in the central Mississippi and Atlantic Flyway.
Mike BrasherGUEST
28:36
Now, I will also tell you that there are very few people that would look at the harvest that occurs on blue-wing teal and say, a- amidst all the other conversations that we have about the relatively low impact of, of harvest, and say that the early teal season, adding another seven days, would be catastrophic to the, to the teal population.
Mike BrasherGUEST
28:54
That's, that's just not true.
Michelle RookHOST
25:05
Let's talk about some of these transportation issues.
Michelle RookHOST
25:08
Uh, for the last couple of years, I know we've been worried about the Mississippi River and barge traffic there, Panama Canal.
Michelle RookHOST
25:18
Already we're seeing some of those, uh, the number of cargos or vessels that go through the Panama Canal have been lowered already, haven't they?
Bree BaatzGUEST
25:27
Correct.
Michelle RookHOST
25:55
But it does restrict exports.
Bree BaatzGUEST
25:58
It certainly does.
Bree BaatzGUEST
25:58
And then when you think about the Mississippi River, which is where it has to go first before it goes via the Panama Canal out of the US, if we're having the fifth year of low water levels, those barge tows have to be light loaded, the, the tugs can't pull as many barges, and that, of course, is just gonna increase transportation costs on top of kind of this fuel component, which is up about 40% year, over year.
Michelle RookHOST
26:22
Well, hopefully, some of this rain that we've been getting up here in this area eventually makes its way down to those areas of the Mississippi that need it to help out.
Amanda TokuyamaSOUNDBITE_SPEAKER
4:12
And so there are four in the U.S. and Milwaukee and Chicago really are really, really interesting and important when it comes to like collision monitoring and collision research because we lie at the intersection of two major flyways.
Amanda TokuyamaSOUNDBITE_SPEAKER
4:30
So we're right along the Mississippi Flyway and the Eastern Flyway.
Amanda TokuyamaSOUNDBITE_SPEAKER
4:34
Both of those kind of intersect at Lake Michigan pretty much.
Amanda TokuyamaSOUNDBITE_SPEAKER
4:38
And so a lot of birds are like funneled down along the lake shore, along that western edge of Lake Michigan, through Milwaukee, through Chicago.
