And so aviation has kind of always been in the family.

So we grew up in San Diego on Miramar, so – Always seeing jets.

Yeah.

So, um, 9/11 for me, um, I got a call from my sister, "Hey, go..." I was, I was stationed in Miramar in San Diego, California.

I was a young, uh, Marine Corps weapons officer, a F-18 weapons officer, brand new to the squadron.

And, um, after the call from my sister that said, "Hey, check the TV," the call was from the Marine Corps saying, "Get, get your, uh, rear end onto base." And I did.

Um, I went in, I loaded up all my flight gear, went out to the combined arms loading area, and hopped in an F-18, and it was filled with, um, six air-to-air missiles, and we stood on the runway at Miramar Marine Corps Air Station, Runway 24 Right, uh, for about four hours, um, waiting for the, uh, order to launch to potentially shoot down an airliner, which we didn't know would happen, right? In the West Coast we didn't know what was going on.

So that was my day.

Um, and then it was after that when I got to see, uh, everything that happened, and, uh, it's, it's something, uh, and a memory for everybody in my generation has a, a different memory.

After Maverick breaks orders to help another shaken pilot safely land, he and Goose are unexpectedly sent to the Navy's elite Top Gun Fighter Weapons School at Naval Air Station Miramar in San Diego.

At Top Gun, Maverick quickly clashes with another top pilot, Tom Iceman Kaczynski, he's played by Val Kilmer, whose cool by-the-book style is the opposite of Maverick's instinct-driven flying.

Maverick also meets Charlie Blackwood, a civilian instructor played by Kelly McGillis, setting up a romance that complicates things when she critiques his flying in front of the class, even as she's clearly impressed by his skills.

Does the U.S. Navy actually have a Top Gun training program?

They do.

And it's located there in Miramar.

So I used to drive a Scion XB when I worked down there, this real boxy small car.

And we would go to like kind of disgusting places to eat, like buffets down on, what was that? not Mission Valley, what's the name of it? Miramar.

Miramar, and then further down, there's that whole chain of, that one building that looked like it was from Sweet Haven, from Popeye, where it was all like crooked and falling down.

You know exactly what I'm talking about.

And I was trying to get a parking space, and the parking spaces are all super narrow.

And then there was that one buffet on Mira Mesa Boulevard.

I don't think it's, or no, was it? No, not on Mira Mesa.

On the one where the Miramar.

There are two different air traffic control centers that are involved in this story.

There is Miramar and there is Lindbergh.

Lindbergh Tower is the approach controller that gets you when you get below a certain altitude.

height, a certain altitude.

And it's just for Lindbergh Field.

And then you have Miramar, which would cover planes and airports throughout the area, throughout San Diego.

So There are two different things going on here, and so it might sound a little confusing in regards to tower control commands and who they're coming from, but I will try to be as clear as possible.

Bear with me.

It's better.

And as I told you, I got into the business because I'm schlepping around industrial buildings in Miramar, San Diego, wearing a tie, sipping on a big gulp and asking people if they had enough warehouse space.

It sucked.
