37 MINS LATER

38:58Deirdre QuarnstromGUEST
When we're building for schools for students of all ages, we look at age appropriateness of the content.
D
39:02Deirdre QuarnstromGUEST
And so that varies from a nine-year-old in elementary school through college student who's getting ready to enter the workforce.
D
39:09Deirdre QuarnstromGUEST
So We take advantage of tools like Minecraft Education to introduce AI literacy, to introduce students to some of the OG AI of machine learning and say, hey, you can actually program this.

And there is an education program where teachers can download modules and teach kids how to code or the logic of coding.
J
35:33Joel DugganHOST
through kind of like a WYSIWYG kind of like dragging icons and connecting different things it's sort of like a map for a satisfactory build or any kind of factory game where you've got to like build certain things and they flow into other things and I could easily see Minecraft coming up with something like that specifically with Minecraft Education that says like hey we're going to show you how to craft your own data pack or your own add-on And we're going to do it in a way that will teach you how to code, but you don't need to know a coding language right away.
J
36:02Joel DugganHOST
So I could see it kind of going either way.
J
36:04Joel DugganHOST
I could see an AI tool.

School Requires an iPad. What Can Parents Control?
B
0:07Ben GillenwaterHOST
The school controls it from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and gives us the Jamf app for after-school hours.
B
0:14Ben GillenwaterHOST
Can you recommend software to better control the apps on it? Minecraft Education Edition is on the iPad and is hard to lock down with the Jamf app.
B
0:26Ben GillenwaterHOST
I am after a better app to control her iPad.
B
0:31Ben GillenwaterHOST
Yeah, isn't that, I mean, these schools, man, they need to stop doing that.
Schools are catching onto tech’s playbook
N
18:30Natasha SingerGUEST
But because, you know, they wanted to grow computer science, they approved boxed curriculum and including, you know, approving the university, uh, courses that have been developed for AP Computer Science, um, and, um, the code.org course, the College Board began approving boxed curriculums from tech companies like Microsoft and Apple.
N
18:52Natasha SingerGUEST
So there's an Apple AP Computer Science course that teaches kids to program in Swift, which is Apple's programming language, and another one from Microsoft, which is like learn to code using Microsoft's Minecraft for Education.
N
19:05Natasha SingerGUEST
And what's striking about this is, um, you know, like you can imagine that parents would not want, say, Pfizer AP Biology, right? Or Northrop Grumman AP Physics, right? Or ExxonMobil Environmental Science AP.
N
19:21Natasha SingerGUEST
So it's striking that like the College Board approved the Apple course and Microsoft courses for AP, something it does in no other subject.
