Mark GuthrieGUEST

You know, it's good for them to know if they're going through divorce and separation, I think, because, you know, it does affect you that much.
Mark GuthrieGUEST
29:32
I wish I knew how to recognise people mental health issues and i wish i knew how to like at the time to to reach out for support and where to reach out for if you don't mind me mentioning a charity there's a charity out there which i always refer people to and i need to get the uh link correct it's mankind.org so they are a really good charity that help males for victims of domestic abuse politically so they help with you know that sort of level and because I think if people don't identify that it is abuse you know then they'll never go to that support as well so you know being told that you can't see your kids or you know you have to pay x y and z if you want to see your kids that's emotional and financial abuse and you know there are charities out there specifically for men, that you can contact, you know, anonymously and talk to people about what's happening, you know, in your life.
Mark GuthrieGUEST
30:37
So, you know, I think if I knew about that when I was going through all of my proceedings, then I probably would have called them.
Mark GuthrieGUEST
30:47
And they've got stats as well.
Amir KhanHOST
10:23
People who do shift work...
Amir KhanHOST
10:25
There is no doubt in my mind, the evidence is very strong, there are increased risk of health issues with regards to their heart, blood pressure, all of these kind of things.
Amir KhanHOST
10:33
But, you know, it's easy for me to say that, but if they need it to survive, then they need it to survive.
Cherry HealeyHOST
10:39
A good friend of mine is a maternity night shift worker, but she gets paid 20% more for every shift.
Leanne ElliottHOST
32:16
Indeed it is.
Leanne ElliottHOST
32:17
It pulled the data of multiple studies and analysed it with one question in mind, or several.
Leanne ElliottHOST
32:21
They combined 43 studies and found that people with higher EQ performed better at work.
Leanne ElliottHOST
32:28
EQ still made a difference after personality and IQ were taken into account.

7 MINS LATER

Al ElliottHOST
39:26
Or it does exist, but it's difficult to measure and therefore it's not really something you should rely on.
Al ElliottHOST
39:32
I still think, I'm going to ask you to correct me in a minute.
Al ElliottHOST
39:35
I still think that it's a good, it's a good like idea to have knocking about because really it just tells people like me, I need to be mindful of other people's emotions and mindful of the people.
Al ElliottHOST
39:46
So that's my thoughts.
Alison GardnerGUEST
33:18
Yeah.
Sarah KingHOST
33:18
and um I think that's a really good resource that you just tapped into you said that you're an ambassador for East Kent Mind and Mind is a fantastic charity so if anyone has um been touched by any of the subjects or knows someone um please go to the website and again we'll link to it in the show notes there is support out there and I think when we're feeling isolated depressed low alone suicidal we find the hardest thing is to reach out and ask for help
Alison GardnerGUEST
33:50
and
Sarah KingHOST
33:50
we really do and that's that is the true medicine because although yes we are alone in this world as an individual we're part of the human race and the collective so just reach out, you know, just whether it's a dance class or a men's health group or a women's circle or,
Mark CrowtherGUEST
50:04
And I hear people saying, oh, no, he's on the bike yet again.
Mark CrowtherGUEST
50:07
But this challenge is Every Mind Matters.
Mark CrowtherGUEST
50:11
And I think it's quite a poignant name to choose because I've talked a lot about my own mental health struggles, but really everyone's mental health is different.
Mark CrowtherGUEST
50:24
it looks different for everybody and how they cope and they struggle it is different and in terms of the charities so I'm supporting four charities which are all very different in their own way and It's not just about trying to raise awareness for the people that need the help, but it's also for what I call the heroes that do all the work, that support the people that struggle, that probably people don't see, and for the sake... for my friend's family, the help that they get from people that people just don't see.
Kevin HarperHOST
55:36
How can people donate? You can follow me on my socials
Mark CrowtherGUEST

Mark CrowtherGUEST
55:42
If you went on to Just Giving and Every Mind Matters, I'll put my name in.
Mark CrowtherGUEST
55:49

Jeremy LeeHOST
36:48
If you're not familiar with his name, he was a very, very successful footballer.
Jeremy LeeHOST
36:55
He went on to become the leader of the Players' Union, and these days he is chair of the mental health charity Mind.
Jeremy LeeHOST
37:06
We talk about mental health every now and then on Just Between Us.
Jeremy LeeHOST
37:11
And Clarke's story, well, it's more harrowing than most.
DawnHOST
53:23
When I run, I get bored and I start thinking of things to push my boundaries and test my body and raise money for charity.
DawnHOST
53:30
I called the challenge Mind Over Matter because it was in support of Mind and that's what it was.
DawnHOST
53:36
The target initially was £500 but David has already raised over £800.
DawnHOST
53:41
If anybody would like to donate to David's efforts, you can visit his Just Giving page and make a donation there soon.
Sophie SamuelHOST
5:25
be true.
Emily SamuelHOST
5:26
And I don't know if that resonates at all, but that was, I don't know, one of the first things that came to my mind.
Sophie SamuelHOST
5:35
I think that's such a good response, Emily.
Sophie SamuelHOST
5:38
I think to approach it from a different perspective, I think when we are in the thick of the crisis, as in there's not very much distance between what has happened and what we're trying to support ourselves with, then it's very helpful to keep it in the day or possibly the hour, sometimes minute or five minutes, and to have maybe some basic thoughts self-care on a daily basis about how you structure your day how you care for your needs so these are like how do I get some movement in my day how do I get some connection in my day How do I eat and sleep? And just how do I have some space for my feelings that are all coming up and keeping it? I think one of the things that happens when we don't know, you don't know how this is going to unfold, where your daughter's recovery is going to end.
Cait DonovanGUEST
39:43
And so part of this book to me is like, here, I'm just introducing all of these various mismatches that could happen, not every single mismatch in the world, because the book would never end, right? I'm just naming them in this morally neutral way so that you can be aware of them because you're finding out that they even exist.
Cait DonovanGUEST
40:05
Most people don't even know that these things exist, never mind that they could do something about them.
Cait DonovanGUEST
40:11
So the idea in this book is to really introduce these ideas in a way that's really like, hey, you're human and these things could totally be part of your life.
Cait DonovanGUEST
40:20
And if they are, here's what we do about it.
TorHOST
51:39
There are so many options available.
TorHOST
51:41
And I think we'll put in like the comments of the description of the episode today, like different like options available to people, like resources out there to use, like Mind and other Samaritans, like different like mental health charities.
TorHOST
51:54
But I think some things that a lot of people aren't always aware of, like I work for a big corporate organization.
TorHOST
52:01
I can't tell any in HR anything.
