Miller Beach

Roosevelt's Unfinished Map Theodore Roosevelt's definition of conservation is what lets sand and steel share a shoreline, and Gary, Indiana has an opportunity to preserve both.

My townhouse in Miller Beach, on the eastern edge of Gary, Indiana, sits a block off the water.

Walk that block north to Well Street Beach, stand on the sand, and the whole argument is laid out in front of you.

Look east and the shoreline runs toward the Porter County Dunes, the Black Oak Savannah, the Interdunal Wetlands, and Collis Bog, where American ecology was more or less invented.

Can you guys explain a little bit about the problems you've had with Holland? You've kind of talked about the fact that that was a very different place to regulate and be a problem.

And I know we're in Gary, and Gary is, Indiana is a state where Indiana allows Airbnbs, but Gary is trying to regulate it in Miller Beach.

And as a result, they're asking for licensing, business license, all kinds of neat things that they can think of to prevent people from being in the business, which I think is good, to your point, that it starts to regulate the business by making it a little harder for barriers to entry.

But what kind of problems have you guys seen in Holland that you mentioned because it was difficult? Or was it Holland or Cadillac? You mentioned Cadillac.

I mean, we s- we still have 80 people in just one area of Gary that are still without power.

That's in the Miller Beach area.

And, uh, Governor Braun, Indiana's governor, is gonna be up here for a noon press conference.

He's gonna be at this Red Cross shelter at the Huffington Campbell Fieldhouse-

in downtown Gary.

And there he's gonna give an update and also tour areas of Northwest Indiana.

Um, he hasn't spelled out which areas, but with the Miller Beach area being up right now the hardest hit, I mean-
