Mill Road

The days are getting colder and shorter and the food we're eating is beginning to reflect the season.

So we've been to Vandal Isle in Mill Road to find out about a couple of their autumnal dishes from Alex Rushmore.

And I visited a new bagel start-up in Cambridge.

I've been to a place in town where you can get loads of international foods at really great prices, and Alan spoke to Rosie Sykes about her forthcoming book.

Anina on Rustack Road has five packs of basil, two tiger bloomer loaves, two long white baguettes and six tiger baguettes, all to give away.

And the other one is Davina.

She's just off Mill Road near the Parkside Pool, and she's got a sourdough loaf, mini Halloween donuts, baguettes, packs of celery, fresh basil and mince, tender stem broccoli, and lots more.

Then there's Lily on Barton Road, who is offering a box of orange-flavoured Turkish Delights.

The Grow Cambridge Farm can be found on Barnwell Road.

A huge amount of fruit, veg and herbs are grown there and regularly dispersed to local food banks and other sites too, like the Edge Cafe at the bottom of Mill Road.

So I had the scent of sage on my hands from its fresh form and then came to the kitchen today along with pumpkins and apples that were also part of the weekly harvest.

And that was my inspiration to create one of the dishes for tonight, which was a sage and apple baked pasta with layers of pumpkin as well.

I spoke to several, including a fermented food producer, but we begin with a member of the public I got chatting to who seemed very knowledgeable about all this.

I'm interested in this stuff.
