Mike Thorne handled production at Advision, and the recording process was anything but lavish.

Wire were not pulling any stops in this department either.

They used a standard four-track machine that had been in use at the BBC for years, so every track they sent to tape had to be intentional.

I mean, obviously more.

But I think that post punks, that, that, you know, that, that, I mean, Mike Thorne, uh, produced Wire and, um, you know, he was very, very sort of like, um, you know, this post punk sound and I think that that, um, you know, the, the synth sound, the analog synth sound that we used and, and, uh, you know, it's, I think it just, it, it...

Uh, I, I have to say, I mean, obviously, I think it personally, I myself, I, you know, I think it's the best thing we ever did myself.

Um, you know, and I, and, and, and so I look at that song and I think, oh yeah, it may deserves, probably deserves the long- the longevity 'cause it is a, it is a, it is a good, it's a good song.

Wire, reminder, are signed to EMI, an imprint of EMI called Harvest, that had released a bunch of progressive artsy rock, like early Pink Floyd.

And they get paired with a producer called Mike Thorne.

Now, Mike Thorne's claim to fame at the time was that he'd worked with Deep Purple, which I have to imagine Wire hated.
