Mike Brearley

Although, as I'm sure we'll talk about shortly, he definitely wasn't a natural captain.

He wasn't a master tactician in the way of a, I don't know, a Richie Beno or something, or a great man manager in the manner of a Mike Brearley.

He was the kind of captain who, If it wasn't going well, I thought, well, the best thing is I'll just take it over the game myself, which quite often he could because he was so good.

He was a captain who... because he hadn't had a lot of coaching himself, he was sort of fairly natural and self-taught.

And I bowled about seven or eight overs, and Imran was just sort of playing me out really, not taking too many risks.

And at the end of about my eighth over, Phil Edmonds, who was the captain that day, 'cause Bri- Mike Brearley was playing for England, uh, he said, um, "Well, okay, have a bowl, have a bowl." So Imran comes over to me and says, "Oh, have, have you finished your spell?" I said yes.

So he said then, "Okay, I'll take my helmet off." So he sent his helmet off with the 12th man.

R- um, Edmonds, who was a bit provocative then, he said, "Have another over.

Yeah, and, and Hadlee, uh, obviously we talked about his bowling, I mean, he was a devastating batsman as well.

I mean, not, again, not technically that good, but he could just, he could take a ta- an attack apart.

And in my, one of my early games, uh, Mike Brearley was captain of Middlesex, and he was England captain as well, and Hadlee was playing well, and Notts had about, sort of, 200 for three or four, and Hadlee was knocking it around for f- for 50 or 60.

And, and Brearley, in my, about my third or fourth first-last game, comes up to me and he says, "Who, who do you think should bowl, Yozza?" And I said, "Well, why are you asking me?" He said, "Well, I, I, I'd just like to know.

But Pat Cummins is not that kind of captain who invents things out on the field.

Ben Stokes is, Eoin Morgan is, you know, Mike Brearley, we can go back.

Those sorts of guys invent things when they're out there.

Yeah.

the Grubs, you bat eight and don't bowl.

You're Mike Brearley, aren't you? Are you tactically very strong, Hamelin? Not strong with the

bat or ball or tactically, to be honest with you, but I love getting out there and getting a bit of fresh air with my mates.
