Mike Bowden,
4:43
you had some responses to that, please.
4:45
I agree with what Isaac says.
4:46
I also think that there's other coalitions at work here and changing, shifting political dynamics in Los Angeles.
4:54
One of them is generational.
4:55
If you see the polling, the mayor is polling favorably with voters 64 and older, and Rahman is polling favorably with everybody younger than that.
5:04
And she is polling higher in her demographics than the mayor is in hers.
6:18
My understanding is most of her time on the council, she spent trying to bolster renters' rights and has drawn the wrath of a lot of the developers and homeowners.
1:35
So how did each candidate make overtures to those voters last night?
1:41
Well, you know, both candidates did, I think, what their campaigns wanted and delivered the lines they wanted and made the hits they wanted.
1:49
Bass's campaign wanted to say you're not ready for primetime, and they wanted to say that Rahman is not trusted by her colleagues and is unreliable and is a risk.
1:59
Raman's campaign really wanted to raise the issue of are you better off than you were four years ago? And she wanted to sort of put a more aspirational spin on her campaign and what voters are considering.
2:10
And both of them did that, and that was their way of trying to get to those undecided voters.
2:16
But what that forgets, though, is that each candidate wants to make the campaign about the other candidate, a referendum on them.
2:26
But the voters want the campaign to be about them and make it a referendum on them.
6:56
And then Bass's answer is, well, that's because it's my program that you you took advantage of.
16:40
Do you think that's an ideological switch internally or do you think that's for politics and for votes?
16:46
I think it's a little bit of a reality check that most elected officials get when they campaign in poetry and then they govern in prose.
16:58
And the window of possibility of what you can do in office is smaller than you imagine from the outside.
17:04
And so you try to make compromises and you try to make deals to get things done.
17:10
What's interesting, though, is Mayor Bass is subject of the same critique, right? Both of them are progressives of different generations from different backgrounds with sort of different priorities.
17:24
But both of them have faced criticism for moving to the center once they've been in office.
17:28
Mayor Bass is actually, you know, she was trying to avoid having a reelection against her first campaign opponent, billionaire Rick Caruso.
19:12
How do you think these two candidates are going to differentiate between each other, given that they are similar?
5:55
I guess it's just one I haven't regularly looked at, but certainly they have become more and more influential in LA politics.
6:03
Yeah.
6:04
What's interesting is a couple of them actually changed after they published.
6:10
Right.
6:10
So the the knock voter guide was recommending Reverend Ray Wong for mayor.
6:19
And then over the weekend they switched to Reverend Ray or Nithya Raman.
6:25

That's what you want right now.
