And Universal Studios also focused on slapstick theatrical shorts and featured characters like Woody Woodpecker, Andy Panda, and Chilly Willy, and 20th Century Fox focused on prolific, formulaic, but beloved theatrical shorts led by Paul Terry with characters like Mighty Mouse and Heckle and Jekyll.

But by the late 1950s and 1960s, the economic model of producing expensive, high-quality theatrical short subjects became unsustainable due to the rising labor costs and the breakup of studio-theater monopolies and the explosion of household television sets.

So studios either closed their doors or just shifted their focus.
