because otherwise you lose all of the tension um and that's the thing that really drew me in but anyway the precursor shit is games like special operations so even though it's ultra rudimentary the fact that combat has these really naturalistic consequences is kind of really alluring um There were other games in the 8-bit era, stuff that will be referenced if you sort of go and look at kind of the discourse on the tactical shooter.
Tony ColesHOST
12:33
People would talk about Microprose's Airborne Ranger
Tony ColesHOST
12:36
is a really good example of being this behind enemy lines spec ops game that was kind of a bit kind of free form, but also a bit isometric and quite blocky.
Tony ColesHOST
12:45
So I think it was only really on Commodore 64 and possibly came to Amstrad and whatnot.
Steve NotleyHOST
7:27
sinister threatening everybody yeah
Andy PiroGUEST
7:29
i mean that's that's kind of what i grew up in so i think when i was maybe like 12 we got a commodore 64 so um i was playing games on there and i i gravitated towards some of the nerdier games i like the microprose games like the hunt for october or pirates was one of my favorites because it was like this if you guys have played it it's no i don't maybe one of the first open world games you could be a trader or a pirate or a privateer so um i've heard of it yeah like one of the the yeah i mean from
Steve NotleyHOST
7:56
what you describe yeah like a sim basically sort of like a civ like game but before a civ Yeah,
Andy PiroGUEST
8:05
like I said, it's open world.
Chris HewishGUEST
9:53
And, you know, really my career is one where I kind of have always had a foot in the creative side of everything and then a foot on the business side.
Chris HewishGUEST
10:02
So I began as a designer, right? You know, really creative, all of that, and worked with some really amazing people at Microprose, which goes way, way back, but on early civilization and stuff like that.
Chris HewishGUEST
10:14
Way back, old
Danny PeñaHOST
10:15
school.
Cody HoffmanHOST
44:45
I was going to say more like a, I want to say Quake or something like that than it is Doom in my opinion.
Cody HoffmanHOST
44:51
But anyways, it's another game where you get to blow away a whole bunch of baddies by Microprose for free on Steam.
Cody HoffmanHOST
45:02
Cool.
Cody HoffmanHOST
45:03
Tim, you're worried about stuff.
ReesHOST
29:46
But it starts off...
ReesHOST
29:48
With, of course, the great man himself, Sid Meier, the creator of Civilization and the co-founder of Microprose and Fireaxis.
ReesHOST
29:54
Of course, Microprose as well.
ReesHOST
29:57
That's a whole different story, so let's not go off on that tangent.
ReesHOST
30:00
But...
ReesHOST
30:32
And you know, the rest is history.
ReesHOST
30:35
Literary.
ReesHOST
30:36
And it talks a bit here about Microprose in the 1980s.
Cody HoffmanHOST
44:45
I was going to say more like a, I want to say Quake or something like that than it is Doom in my opinion.
Cody HoffmanHOST
44:51

Cody HoffmanHOST
45:02
Cool.
Cody HoffmanHOST
45:03
Tim, you're worried about stuff.
Lewis BrindleyHOST
2:01
Oh, you got good luck, didn't
SipsHOST
2:02

SipsHOST
2:04
Microprose game in 2026.
SipsHOST
2:05
How about you guys? What have you guys been up to? I've been watching The Traitors as well.
SipsHOST
2:09
The new Celebrity Traitors.
Jess MorrissetteHOST
33:50
I think that's the main thing I worry about.
Ben VigeantHOST
33:52
You know, listen, I don't know how much the current owner of the Microprose trademark owns.
Ben VigeantHOST
34:03
Probably nothing.
Ben VigeantHOST
34:04
Probably just the logo.
DrexyHOST
51:39
So anyway, I've mentioned both Steel Company and Steel Wolverines, inspired by Steel Panzer games.
DrexyHOST
51:48
One of them that I've been looking forward to for ages, which is published by Microprose, is called... uh arch rebel which is um inspired by the old x-com and um laser squad games so it the graphics are very much of the uh 16-bit era inspired by those games uh turn-based tactic games um Another one is called Veterans, Napoleonic Wars, which is sort of, it's like a Napoleon-style Total War game, which I've been looking forward to as well, which has been on my wishlist for quite a while.
DrexyHOST
52:31
Another weird one is called Captive 3000, which is inspired by an old dungeon crawler from the Atari and the Amiga called Captive.
DrexyHOST
52:42
And actually, there is one game I sort of discovered.
Aaron DoughtyHOST
27:59
know, our buddy Buck Owens just mentioned in the chat, he's not wrong.
Aaron DoughtyHOST
28:03
He says, if Microprose had published this, it would have had a 107-page manual with all the logistics info written and history and equipment guide.
Aaron DoughtyHOST
28:13
That's a good point.
Aaron DoughtyHOST
28:14
And that actually would have helped because you can only do so much with an insert and a cassette tape.
