This is a real mindset conversation I find a lot when it comes to people who are in service businesses like this.

Mick HawesGUEST
Expectation and the ability to communicate, I think, is at the heart of it and, and there's, there's many other things that we can talk about around that.

Mick HawesGUEST
But one of the things that I encourage people to do is when you've put somebody in charge of a role, let's say they're a salesperson, they could be a receptionist, they could be an account manager or whatever their role is, is, is to create a, a purpose statement.

Mick HawesGUEST
I find that a job description is like you end up getting the person from the neck down because a job description is, "Sky, your role is to do this, to do that, to do the other." And, like, if they're really organized, they will have procedures around it and measurement, you know, KPIs around it to make sure you are doing what is asked, and that's kind of where it sits.

Mick HawesGUEST
But my issue with it is- That in my mind, I'm just getting you to do what I want you to do, how I want you to do it, when I want you to do it, and so I'm cutting you off at the neck.

I was in the building industry a- as an electrician, apprentice electrician, and then as an electrician later on.

Um, and w- when I started getting into the coaching space, I'd done a lot of coaching in big corporates as well, you know, American Express and, um-Phillips and Valvoline and and and and, you know, big corporations and, and that was okay.

Mick HawesGUEST
Like, I can hold my own in a, in a boardroom, but it was like driving the Queen Mary, like you just ... to try and turn it around, it, it, it was just so difficult.

Mick HawesGUEST
Whereas when you're working with a small business we can have a conversation in the morning, implement it by morning tea, get a bit of feedback on it by lunch and change it, you know, for the last half [laughs] of the day.

Mick HawesGUEST
You can get things moving really, really quickly, and, uh, builders and tradespeople were just people that I just, um, resonated with and, and that, that's how I ended up with, with, with builders.
