Mick Doohan

Before you say, "Why have you done an ep with Paul's father?" I wanna give you a sense of the way he's regarded in many areas of the sport.

This is from five-time world motorcycle champion and Australian Motorsport Hall of Famer Mick Doohan, who I reached out to in the lead-up.

This is a little of the voice message he sent me.

Look, TM is just, uh, is just one of those amazing people.

But when you've got someone there lecturing you like a headmaster, then, oh my God, you're terrified.

Yeah, and we can add it to the great sort of after incident little recordings that we've had with Australian riders with Mick Doohan, Tal and Alex Crivey off in Eastern Creek in 1996.

Your impression of racing needs to be fine-tuned, I think, a little bit.

And then, of course, Harass 2011, the greats, your ambition outweighed your talent.

The success list is rather impressive.

Mick Doohan, Casey Stoner, Troy Corsa, Troy Bayliss, Christopher Mullen and Remy Gartner.

They've all been successful in their own right and have proudly represented Australia on the biggest stages in world motorcycling.

The impact that Gartner left still resonates to this day with the next generation of riders aspiring to emulate their current day heroes and be racing alongside them in future years.

Yeah, I know Toby fairly well.

And then we look at the road racing.

We've had Wayne Gardner, Mick Doohan, Casey Stoner, Daryl Beattie, Jack Miller, Joel Kelso, Jacob Ralston.

There's a massive pool there.

I mean, the Bathurst thing in 85, that was the worst riots they had.

And funnily enough, Mick Doohan was there as a fan, as a punter.

And the paddock is at the bottom of the hill.

And Bathurst, it's called Mount Panorama, the racetrack.

And then they come to Australia.

I mean, the first ever world super black race was in Orem Park in Australia and Mick Doohan as a wildcard won it.

Right.

So, and there was all those great days where we had Bayless as a wildcard and Peter Goddard and Robbie Phyllis and here, and then you'd go to America and you got Miguel Duhamel and, And it opened the door for Nikki Hayden and Ben Bostrom and Eric Bostrom.

And also the rider just used the clutch as, as a tool.

Um, I mean, Mick Doohan when he was racing NSR500s all season, and then he'd go to the Suzuka 8 Hour, uh, once, once a year riding a, a RVF, uh, 750 four-stroke.

That's some bike as well.
