Michaelmas

He was physically exhausted, often sick, and worried that the movement he had begun was becoming something much bigger and more complicated than he had ever intended, so he went somewhere quiet.

Francis withdrew to Mount La Verna, a rugged mountain retreat in Tuscany, to spend several weeks fasting and praying in preparation for the Feast of St. Michael the Archangel.

According to the earliest Franciscan accounts, Francis prayed for two particular graces before his death, to understand something of the love Christ experienced during his passion and something of the suffering he endured on the cross.

Then came the vision.

And it's important that we understand that because we celebrate this day, the stigmatization of our Holy Father St. Francis, because he was on one of his 740-day fasts that he used to do every year.

One of them was from... until the Feast of St. Michael the Archangel.

It would end on the Feast of St. Michael the Archangel, and during the few days after the exaltation of the cross, our Holy Father St. Francis was praying on Mount Alverna, and he had prayed that God would allow him to experience in his own body at least a little bit of the pain that our Lord suffered for for us poor sinners on the cross, provided that he could also experience just a little bit of that love that God had for us poor sinners on the cross.

And as we know, our Lord appeared to him when he was in prayer on September 17th, two years before he died.

You know, as the image of a seraph as an angel with six wings.

You're going to, like, banquets and stuff.

And you kind of get the sense that if this guy wanted a quiet life, you know, so far, so good, right? He is almost through his term, which ends on Michaelmas, the 29th of September.

The Crofts were to have possession at Michaelmas, and as Sir Walter proposed moving to Bath in the course of the preceding month, there was no time to be lost in making every dependent arrangement.

A beloved home made over to others; all the precious rooms and furniture, groves and prospects, beginning to own other eyes and other limbs! She could not think of much else on the 29th of September; and she had this sympathetic touch in the evening from Mary, who, on having occasion to note down the day of the month, exclaimed—

So we have a suitably abundant episode for you today.

It actually physically gave farmers more light in the sky to get the harvest in.

And so it's a lovely way of connecting to the season and to the welcoming back of the night skies and the darkness.

So the harvest in the UK is completed by a day, uh, it's a festival called Michaelmas, which is on the 29th of September.

Michaelmas, or the Feast of Saints, is a honoring of Archangel Michael, who defeated Satan and darkness, and he is a celebration.

It will be a source of satisfaction to the present writer if he shall have helped to make the immortal writings of this great genius known to some who were previously unacquainted with him.

And what's one thing you think, um, law schools could do better at to prepare their students for a career in the law?

Well, I would say the, the most effective law teaching I have seen anywhere was, uh, the lectures given here in Oxford by, uh, a don at Brasenose called John Davies, who gave a course of lectures, uh, every Michaelmas called Recent Cases in Tort, I think it was, and then in s- in, in Hilary, Recent Cases in Contract.

And each lecture was devoted to just one case, only one case for an entire lecture.

And he'd look at a recent decision of a House of Lords usually, and he would tell you about the background, the legal background of a case, what the arguments on either side were, what views had been expressed by the judges, and what the implications of the decision were.
