Michael Bishop

Everybody's talking about this nickel package that Michigan will install in this football game.

They have to be very careful of the balance with Michael Black and his ability to run the ball.

Look for Michigan to get into the nickel package, disguise coverage, and I think the key is putting pressure on Ryan Leaf with blitzes, linebackers, safeties, and the Heisman Trophy winner, Charles Woodson.

Everybody thinks he's a great cover man, but he's just as effective when he comes after quarterbacks.

That kind of crossed my mind earlier about Kansas State because they won for the first time with Michael Bishop.

They were number one in the country.

And then A&M happened in the Big 12 title game.

And I mean that, like, complimentary.

Like, you talk to Michael Bishop and Brian Bell and some of the players that he had early on.

Like, they say Willie Fritz used to put on a helmet and, like, go through practice.

And, like, Willie denies that.

You just can't.

But I pointed this out before that when you go back at Bill Snyder and look at his history, you think of Michael Bishop and Colin Klein and the great teams, great quarterbacks.

It was always kind of about the defense.

I mean – The biggest thing to happen in 98 is short of the one thing we're not going to talk about.

The guy should not have won the Heisman Trophy based on that one game.

Absolutely.

They absolutely took him out of the game, erased him while Michael Bishop was awesome.

And...

Unfortunately, you're going against a team that could make it a whole lot worse.

Have you ever in your career, and I bet I know the answer to this, but [laughs] had a coach maybe admit to you off the record of, "Hey, just so you know, we're, we're scheming like this and calling plays like this 'cause we just don't think the quarterback can run it right"? Because they didn't have to say that yesterday, and that's what I was thinking.

Because I felt like the play calling was very pedestrian, it was very conservative, and I felt it was because they didn't trust Cam to make the, the long throws.

Well, I didn't see the game, so I don't know.

But I've never heard, heard a coach go into a game like that with a starting quarterback with that kind of plan.

You know, usually if you do that, it's 'cause you're playing, like, a third stringer that you gotta force into the lineup.

And I would be surprised if that was true.

Mahomes is the exception, who sat there for a year.

I remember the kid out of Kansas State.
