Miatta Fahnbulleh

Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero

3:46
So do you want to explain to John why that's a good idea?
3:50
Yeah, John.
3:50
Look, I think it is genuinely a complete travesty that our generation of politicians have failed to grip social care And anyone that has to take their loved ones through the care system and navigate through it will tell you harrowing stories of how it is failing us.
4:05
And so I think it is incredibly brave.
4:07
It is a hard thing politically to say, I'm not going to run away from this big issue, I'm going to run it.
4:13
And, you know, the fact that the Prime Minister has done that, and he's done that with the kind of clarity that comes from having experienced it himself, and said, we need to solve this once and for all, and to be really honest, that there will be trade-offs involved in that.
4:27
And so, yes, the triple lock will be adjusted, and we're doing that in a way that...

53:51
decision obviously hasn't yet been made about Jack Doran, Rosebank, gas and oil fields, which is what you were referring to.
11:55
So you would not consider these two as new- ... oil and gas fields under that definition?
12:00
Well, so that they are not new oil and gas fields.
12:02
They're oil and gas fields that are already open.
12:04
Um, and I think it's important to say that.
12:06
But listen, our manifesto is really clear.
12:08
There will be no new licenses.
12:09
There are obviously two decisions about existing fields that are on my table.
17:01
Makes, it makes your job harder.

9:36
Is that still a hard target? Or could you get to 2030 with more gas on the system and still regard this as like a policy success?
9:43
Well, look, when we came in and we said Clean Power by 2030, most people were quite skeptical.
9:49
And actually what's been incredible over the last two years is that it has galvanized the system and created huge amounts of momentum.
9:55
And in the end, that's the purpose of targets, to try to shift investment, to try to shift the system in order to respond.
10:02
And I think we have done that.
10:03
So I'm incredibly proud of the progress that has been made.
10:07
More progress needs to be made because ultimately I'm really clear that unless we have clean power driving the system more often, we're not going to get that impact in terms of bills.

12:13
What's the thinking there?
8:57
How does that sit within the government's priorities more broadly?
9:02
I mean, look, we as a government, Labour governments, by the way, have always been leaders in climate action.
9:08
You know, we were at the top of the world when we put in place our Climate Change Act and other countries have followed.
9:17
We are, by the way, leading the way in clean energy.
9:21
And so we will always hold that with great care and great responsibility.
9:28
And so across the piece, we are very clear that delivering on our climate commitments is absolutely key.
9:34
And it's key because we've got a global responsibility, but it also is key because we have a domestic responsibility.

12 MINS LATER

22:05
But the fact that we're doing it means that you should be doing it as well.
17:43
You speak for the government.
17:44
We...
17:44
Look, we, we will make a decision.
17:46
And what I would say, um, so the f- tw- two things that have become really clear to me about the North Sea is there are two issues that are being conflated.
17:55
There is one, which is the, the genuine issue around the decline of Aberdeen, um, the decl- the denuding of that community.
18:04
Once a proud, vibrant economy and North Sea workers.
18:09
And you know, I get a little bit- Uh, triggered, uh, when I get this criticism from our opposite number, uh, from, uh, the Conservative Party, because candidly, half of the jobs in the North Sea were lost between two thousand thirteen and two thousand twenty-three.
22:38
How do you think the summer's gone with the new government?
27:30
[audience applauding] Miata Fahmbulah, is that something this government's prepared to do, look people in the eye and say, "This is what we're gonna need"?
27:41
Listen, I, I don't think anyone who has interacted with the care system can leave it thinking anything other than it is broken.
27:48
And I think...
27:49
Look, I agree with Tom.
27:50
I think it has been a com- collective failure that we haven't gripped social care.
27:54
And I'm actually really proud of the Prime Minister.
27:56
I'm really proud of Andy that he's decided even though this is really hard, it's the sort of thing that generally politicians try and dance away from, he is running at it.

[applause]
6:23
May I ask that?
6:25
Yeah, look, I think, first of all, I think we're all reeling as, you know, more information about Anne's death comes out.
6:35
And it is a time where, you know, I'm a relatively new MP, I'm two years in, and you don't feel safe.
6:42
You know, the first time you walk through the door, you have fear.
6:45
pretty intense security briefing that kind of brings home just how vulnerable you are and credit actually to the parliamentary authorities and the security authorities.
6:54
I mean, they have been absolutely brilliant, certainly in my journey at every step of the way.
6:59
Your access, if you feel under threat, is brilliant.

22 MINS LATER

28:41
Well, let's go to her first.
4:46
... "I mean, these people are angry and this is what they think of us"?
4:49
So I think, um, it kind of validated what I was worried about.
4:52
I think the bit that really struck me was just the depths of anger and disappointment and how much of it was attributable to the Prime Minister in a way that, to be honest, I don't think is fair.
5:03
And I've spent a lot of time trying to understand and sort of rationalize it.
5:07
And I think in part, there was so much hope.
5:10
You know, people were so ground down and so fed up by the end of the Tory days, and there was so much hope when we came in.
5:16
Uh, and you know, Peckham is a Labour place, had been a Labour place, uh, no longer.

13 MINS LATER

18:00
What is it you were able to do that the system at the moment isn't able to do, and why?
