Roaring noon, in a well-fanned 42nd Street cellar, I met Gatsby for lunch.

Blinking away the brightness of the street outside, my eyes picked him out obscurely in the anteroom, talking to another man.

Mr. Carraway, this is my friend Mr. Wolfsheim.

A small, flat-nosed Jew raised his large head and regarded me with two fine growths of hair which luxuriated in either nostril.

After a moment I discovered his tiny eyes in the half-darkness.

"'So I took one look at him,' said Mr. Wolfsheim, shaking my hand earnestly.

"'And what do you think I did?' "'What?' I inquired politely.

but evidently he was not addressing me, for he dropped my hand and covered Gatsby with his expressive nose.

I handed the money to Catspaw, and I said, All right, Catspaw, don't pay him a penny till he shuts his mouth.

He shut it then and there.

Gatsby took an arm of each of us and moved forward into the restaurant, whereupon Mr. Wolfsheim swallowed a new sentence he was starting, and lapsed into a somnambulatory abstraction.

"'Highballs?' asked the head-waiter.

you had the blood.

With Wolfsheim or whatever?

Mm-hmm, mm-hmm.

I remember that.

Part one, you know, when your money makes you money, what's the world to do to do? And you start the song, it's very like, you know, and that first verse, that's like part one.

Once you get to the, after the second verse, I look at the Wolfsheim beat when, you know, we're all like at the, you know, having the dice and I'm having a good time at the party.

That's like part two.

And then it goes throughout until the dance break.

Who is he, anyhow? An actor? No.

A dentist? Meyer Wolfsheim? No, he's a gambler.

Gatsby hesitated, then added coolly.

He's the man who fixed the World Series back in 1919.

"'Certainly not for a common swindler who'd have to steal the ring he put on her finger.' "'Oh, I won't stand this!' cried Daisy.

"'Oh, please, let's get out!' "'Who are you, anyhow?' broke out Tom.

"'You're one of that bunch that hangs around with Meyer Wolfsheim.

"'That much I happen to know.

"'Mr.

Gatsby introduces Nick to Meyer Wolfsheim.

Wolfsheim is a gambler described with visceral, unsettling details.

He's small, flat nosed with hair growing out of his nostrils.

And then he drops the hammer.

Tom reveals that he's been investigating Gatsby.

He exposes the fact that Gatsby and Meyer Wolfsheim bought up a chain of side street drug stores in Chicago and sold grain alcohol over the counter.

He exposes the bootlegging.

Who is he, anyhow? An actor? No.

There's a softness and a gentleness to him that he, he plays against well in all his creep roles.
