Mexican Gothic

Yeah, I've got it right over here.

One that is on my to-be-read list, and I'm wondering if either of you have read, is called Mexican Gothic.

It's by Silvia Moreno-Garcia, and it's creepy.

She is supposed to be an amazing writer, and I have a couple of books on my TBR that she has written, but I haven't gotten there yet.

Yeah, that's so true.

I got Mexican Gothic, which I really, really want to read, by Silvia Moreno-Garcia.

The girl at Barnes & Noble, I swear they know us by face at this point, but she was saying this is a really good spooky season type of book.

Okay.

Right.

I think of the works that I've read of hers, it reminded me the most of Mexican Gothic because of the sort of I don't know, darkness of the, you know, lingering over it.

And it's set in kind of a depressing old house full of people who don't like each other all that much.

Right.

We move from the sterile freezing ash of the Navitson house to a house that is sweating, breathing, and literally rotting from the inside out.

Book number two in our exploration of architecture is Silvia Moreno-Garcia's Mexican Gothic, published in 2020.

And this is just a masterclass in suffocating atmospheric dread.

It really is.

The overarching dread is the slow dawning realization that the house itself and the family inside it operates as a single parasitic organism and it's actively looking to consume Noemi.

Now, from an industry perspective, the article notes a deeply frustrating missed opportunity here.

Hulu actually optioned Mexican Gothic shortly after publication, developing it as an 8 to 10 episode limited series.

Oh, I remember hearing about that.
