Metropolitan Riveters

We might even read your message or play your voice note on an upcoming episode with your permission, of course.

So on today's episode, I sat down with a trailblazer in women's hockey, Bulbul Kartanbay, who spent her professional career here in Newark playing for my favorite NWHL team, the Metropolitan Riveters.

Now she's building up women's hockey in her home country of Kazakhstan, while also doing some great hockey-related work up in Toronto.

But before we get into all of that, let's hear from one of my fellow podcasters, and when we come back, I'll give you a rundown of a bunch of new Asian players to watch for this season.

She was a member of the Kazakh national team and most recently played league hockey in the Swiss Women's Hockey League.

Her career in North America began when she was drafted by the Boston Blades in the 2017 CWHL draft, and then she ended up trying out for the Calgary Inferno, but would finally play for the Calgary Coyotes.

In 2019, she signed her first North American contract with my favorite hockey team, the Metropolitan Riveters, becoming the very first Kazakh player in the NWHL.

Bulbul also founded the Women's Hockey Academy in Kazakhstan and is an outspoken advocate for women's empowerment in sports and culture, both in Asia and across the world.

She loved the Riveters.

New York Riveters, was that what they were called?

I don't know what league it was, but they had a great logo, and she loved the jersey 1,000 years ago.

All right.
