Metroid: Other M

i think that's the one a certain someone said the first half is really good in the second half not so much

Is that the same someone that doesn't know what Metroid Other M is? It might be.

I'm actually playing that game later this year.

[laughs] So what have you been up to?

Um, I've been mostly playing, if you haven't picked up on it, but mostly been playing Metroid: Other M. I think I mentioned that last time.

Um, I, I...

It's good.

There's one, one more, uh, very important thing that happens.

So a couple years after Metroid Prime 3, we have the announcement of Metroid Other M.

Uh, it's, it's the closing, it's the closing announcement of Nintendo's E3 tune, uh, 2009 show.

And, um, Yoshio Sakamoto, um, he does, um, a ton of interviews with a bunch of gaming outlets.

And, uh, someone who we've actually talked about on the podcast before, uh, Steven Totilo, he, um, uh, does an interview with, uh, Sakamoto for Kotaku, and one of the questions that he asks Sakamoto is, "Hey, is Metroid Other M related to Metroid Dread?" And basically Sakamoto, this is the first official confirmation that we've had from Nintendo, he says, "Metroid Other M is its own unique thing, has no relation to Metroid Dread, but Metroid Dread was a real game that was in development at one point."

Mm-hmm.

And that's the first time we hear directly from the horse's mouth that, yes, Metroid Dread was at one point a real game.

But, like, it kinda definitely paints the whole Galactic Federation as this, this bad guy, right? Um, and so Metroid Dread is not interested in telling that story.

Aaron was playing Savage Moon, Dark Void, and Dead Runner.

Fish was playing Metroid Other M and Dead Rising 2.

I think this was around the time that I was writing for that...

What was that network of local...

They're all like robots, but they're still trying to feel stuff.

And I think people, it's the same thing as like when Metroid Other M came out and people were like, they hated to hear Samus talk.

They hated seeing when she was young and all that shit.

No, dude, this is, you gotta learn.

The only, the only thing that mistranslation stated was the scale of the conspiracy.

Like, um, obviously if you go to Metroid: Other M, you can clearly see that conspiracy in action.

You can clearly see the scale of that conspiracy, that it's, you know, this small group, they send an assassin to, um, to take care of, of that small group, and done.

So there's definitely something going on there.

Like, there's no conclusive, there's no conclusive ending given to that.

You know what would've just made so much sense? And pe- people will hate it, but, like, whatever.

If, if, if Metroid: Other M was just Metroid 5 and it took place immediately after Metroid Fusion, and just like... 'Cause, like, everything about that game suggests, like, the evil, like, [laughs] Galactic Federation guy at the end gets his comeuppance, right? And, like-

Uh, well, Charles, I wanna toss it to you as we kinda round out the show, our last topic.

Uh, End of Abyss, uh, you reviewed for us.

I really wanna know what you think because this is one I think that's been on a lot of our radars for, what? Years now.

Like, at, at least a year-

Yeah.

Uh, I like it quite a bit.

Um, End of Abyss is a, a survival horror Metroidvania, is the best way I would put it.

yeah the the third person camera was not the issue at all with uh Metroid Other M so yeah I say absolutely let's try that again

yeah like like You know, for a long time after Other M, I was like, the game controls fine and it's a story, that's a problem.

And I actually retract that.

Yeah.

This is tough.

You know what? Let's even shout out Metroid Other M.

I think even Metroid Other M does it better because like there's no power bomb expansions.
