Meteor shower

It's the time for the towered meteors.

Or more accurately, the north and south towered meteor showers.

Or torrids.

Towered torrids.

Yeah, yeah, it's really close.

Got some planetary conjunctions, meteor showers, and all kinds of stuff.

Planets are actually getting very well placed.

Mercury is low in the east-northeast.

And then as well, still have that 10P Temple 2 chugging along that what's going to be at magnitude 11. fading after its August opposition there.

I think I did take a look at it, but it wasn't all that bright.

Some meteor showers, got the southern torrids right at the start of the month.

Those are usually pretty good.

I'm Kelly Beaty of Sky and Telescope magazine, and tonight we're going on a tour of the stars and planets that you'll see overhead during November.

In this episode, you'll get in sync with the moon's phases, watch the sky for all five bright planets, get the lowdown on the celestial queen, and get ready for three meteor showers.

Sky Tour November begins with the Moon at last quarter.

in some tellings of andromeda's rescue perseus is riding pegasus and the dim stars of cetus the sea monster are three or four fists below the great square It might not be obvious, but the bright stars in this part of the sky, starting with Deneb high up and then down through Cassiopeia and Perseus and ending with the brilliant star Capella low in the northeast, all lie along the central plane of our Milky Way galaxy.

If you can get out under a really dark sky this month, this association will become obvious to you.

So go for it! November is also the peak of three minor meteor showers.

Two of these appear to be radiating from the constellation Taurus, which doesn't get well up in the eastern sky until late evening.

If you look into the northeast sky, as Halloween, of course, as we move on the eve here, if you look into the northeast sky, there's a constellation there called Taurus.

And there are two meteor showers called the Southern and Northern Taurids.

And they rain forth about November 3rd.

They start up.

They can actually start during the holidays right here with Halloween.

But this is a time of year between now and, let's say, middle of November, where if you look into the sky, for some strange reason, these two intersecting meteor showers cause slow-moving fireballs, not these fast meteors.

You may not see some.

You may see a lot.

Rutherford County residents could have a front row seat to one of the year's most beautiful meteor showers this week.

The Orionid meteor shower is expected to peak Wednesday and Thursday nights, October 21st and 22nd, with as many as 10 to 20 meteors visible per hour.

According to NASA, the Orionids are known for their speed and bright glowing tail that can linger in the sky for several seconds.

For the best view in Rutherford County, residents should head away from the bright lights of Murfreesboro, Smyrna and Luverne, particularly after midnight.

Forecasters are calling for clear skies across Middle Tennessee, creating favorable viewing conditions.

The meteor showers originates from debris left behind by Halley's Comet.

Meanwhile, Tennessee lawmakers are considering a major change to the state's execution procedures following two failed lethal injections.

State Senator Richard Briggs says lawmakers are examining alternatives, including execution by firing squad, after problems involving death row inmates Krista Pike and Tony Carruthers.
