Isaac Bradley and Joseph Whittaker Twelve miles from the sea on the bank of the Merrimack River is the busy town of Haverhill.

It was a small settlement in 1690.

There was a cluster of houses and a meeting house.

In the American state of Massachusetts, one of the New England states, which was colonized by the stern Puritans who were driven from our country by civil and religious persecution, has sprung up within the last 30 years the largest manufacturing town of the vast republic.

Lowell is situated not a great distance from Boston, at the confluence of the rivers Merrimack and Concord.

The falls of these rivers here afford a natural moving power for machinery, and at the latter end of the year 1813, a small cotton manufacture was here set up, where the sound of labor has not been heard before.

The original adventure was not a prosperous one, but in 1826, the works were bought by a company or corporation, and from that time Lowell has gone on so rapidly increasing that it is now held to be the greatest manufacturing city in America.

The old deacon still calls her a good child and prays every night and morning for the factory girls.

Read by Marianne Scenes on the Merrimack I have been but a slight traveler, and the beautiful rivers of our country have, but with one or two exceptions, rolled their bright waves before the orbs of fancy alone and not to my visual senses.

But the few specimens which have been favored me of river scenery have been very happy in the influence they have exerted upon my mind in favor of this feature of natural loveliness.

Yeah.

This, of course, you know, my nightmare driving off a bridge or an overpass into the water below just happened to a transport truck driver in Massachusetts plunged into the Merrimack River in Manchester.

That's not good.

It was a multi-vehicle crash.

And his wife is talking about it with WHDH-TV.
