Mercury Boulevard

Then I spent about eight years down at Dunbar Irwin Middle School on 16th Street and then was uptown for three years.

And that uptown means I was north of Mercury Boulevard, which a lot of people would say, well, that's still in the South District of Newport News.

But then I went back and I went back again as an assistant principal at Booker T. Washington Middle School.

and then when that principal left to go and become the principal at Huntington Middle School she asked me if I'd like to go along and I said sure and so I spent the last two years that I was physically in a school at Huntington Middle School great experiences you know a lot of people say I would teach elementary I'd teach high school I would never teach middle school I can tell you there's no two days that are the same in middle school those kids have so many things going on physically that it was always interesting to say the least but it was a wonderful experience to me it was wonderful experience for me to work downtown working with at-risk kids and uh i feel like i did a good job with those kids the most humbling thing that i experienced today is when i'm out and about and we've been in a number of parades uh the last couple weekends The number of kids downtown that are no longer kids, they're adults, and they would be calling out my name, Mr. Hamilton, Mr. Hamilton.
