Lottie RaeHOST

Um, because of this, Wills now moves higher up the chain.
Lottie RaeHOST
17:19
Eventually, the expedition reaches Menindee in Western New South Wales.
Camo HilderHOST
17:24
Hmm.
Lottie RaeHOST
17:24
And this matters because Menindee is essentially one of the last major points of European settlement before they push into much more remote country.
Camo HilderHOST
17:32
I was gonna ask if Menindee was a joint by then.
Lottie RaeHOST
17:35
Mm-hmm.
Lottie RaeHOST
17:36
Uh, if you wanna regroup, Menindee would be the place, and if you wanna wait for everyone, this would also be the place.
Lottie RaeHOST
17:43
If you wanna make fucking absolutely sure that your supplies are organized before disappearing north, this would have been the place.
Vickie KnightPANELIST
27:25
So you know, it's not-- it's remote.
Vickie KnightPANELIST
27:27
It's not probably as rural, but we also had to service all of the other parts of the Far West Local Health District, places like Walgett and Bourke and Menindee and Lightning Ridge.
Vickie KnightPANELIST
27:40
And, um, we had a lot of FIFO staff, right? All of our doctors flew in from Sydney.
Vickie KnightPANELIST
27:47
Most of our allied health flew in from somewhere else, and we were the poor people who [laughs] were left holding the patients when everyone else left.
Shane PhillipsGUEST

Part of my work has been in chill manipulation, which I started in 2000, so 26 years ago.
Shane PhillipsGUEST
2:11
A long time, I was involved at the Tandow at Menindee and we were growing apples and cherries there and then that's when I found out I had to learn a lot about lacquer chill.
JessHOST
2:23
Because we didn't have any.
Shane PhillipsGUEST
2:25
It was a great place to grow.
Shane PhillipsGUEST
2:41
I had a mate's farm down at Swan Hill.
Shane PhillipsGUEST
2:43
I was doing work with him and I started doing another couple of orchards in the Riverland to monitor chill variance between regions and then monitor we started doing work on cherries in three areas to look at how could we manipulate crop loads, where was a critical time of manipulation and how do we actually manipulate them?
JessHOST
3:03
So growing cherries in Menindee.
JessHOST
3:05
Now, I don't know if too many people have tried that feat, but I'm interested to hear about your work and your experiences.
Michael GoodenGUEST
15:37
They're only getting the allocation that's being set to them.
Michael GoodenGUEST
15:40
And there's a fair bit of controversy around how the lower lakes are being managed and You know, what flows can come down the Darling and how much can be held in Menindee and all this.
Michael GoodenGUEST
15:48
Like, there's a lot going on, a lot of moving pieces.
Michael GoodenGUEST
15:51
I suppose for me, from, you know, being solutions orientated, like, it's just screaming out that we need to be thinking about this holistically.
Cassie HoughHOST
49:11
Ian Proudfoot, KPMG International's Global Head of Agribusiness, speaking with Warwick Long.
Cassie HoughHOST
49:18
Finally today, despite a wet season in the far west of New South Wales, the Menindee Lakes, 100 kilometres from Broken Hill, are experiencing poor water quality and low levels coming into summer.
Cassie HoughHOST
49:30
Menindee has seen multiple mass fish kill events in recent years, the biggest seeing close to 30 million fish die in the region in March of 2023.
Cassie HoughHOST
49:40
Rural reporter Em Jensen this week caught up with Cameron Lay.
Cassie HoughHOST
49:44
He's the Director of Freshwater Fisheries and Threatened Species with the Department of Primary Industries about concerns for the condition of the river and the lakes as the weather warms up.
Cameron LaySOUNDBITE_SPEAKER
50:52
This has been the site of a lot of those significant fish kills.
Cameron LaySOUNDBITE_SPEAKER
50:56
And some of that has been because there's been an accumulation of fish and there hasn't been, you know, sufficient resources, food, oxygen, et cetera, for them to survive.
Cameron LaySOUNDBITE_SPEAKER
51:04
So some of these initiatives like we're looking at today around the fish tube and the fish heart system, if they can allow fish to move out of the Menindee Weirpool and up into the lake system and to migrate further up the Darling, then hopefully we've got a better chance that we won't see large-scale fish kills like we've seen in the past.
Tommy TuckerGUEST
2:26
From what, all the way to Broken Hill, you know.
Tommy TuckerGUEST
2:28
Well, Kenya, Menindee, all the way in.
Tommy TuckerGUEST
2:31
All them fellas out there that love football.
Tommy TuckerGUEST
2:33
All them communities love football.
Catherine HinesGUEST
34:38
Some are the remote sites.
Catherine HinesGUEST
34:40
um around the area as well but because that's it you know preventative medicine saves us coming later so having a gp that they can see out there without having to try five hours like you wouldn't want to do that on a regular basis so having that option where they can go and see a doctor close by and i think the good thing also with the retrieval team we do have a doctor doing telehealth as well so if anyone in the remote sites like Menindee, Tippaburra those areas so the nurses nurse run clinics there if they've got any issues they'll call our doctor but people on stations like there's a lot of like gas mines as well up in Queensland that also will call and local you know honeymoon as well down the road and all those kind of things um if they've got issues they can call us and the doctor can assess whether you know they take something from the medical chest if they've got one nearby or if they need retrieving or yeah or a plan or if they need to see a gp for follow-up or any kind of thing that they need they can call yeah they might not necessarily have to get retrieved but they're getting treated for their issue as well so which is really important
Darren GriggHOST
35:57
And a lot of those farmers out there, I'm thinking of the one at Tilpa, for example, the clinic there, you know, they would say, look, I'll leave it for a while.
Darren GriggHOST
36:04
I'll feel okay today.
John CronshawGUEST
27:38
That's another story another day.
John CronshawGUEST
27:41
But he took us on this flight over Wilcannia, White Cliffs, Menindee, those areas, Lee Creek, and I'd just put together a tour that I was going to sell to the public to do that sort of thing.
John CronshawGUEST
27:55
Yes.
John CronshawGUEST
27:57
I thought, I wonder if the Bush Church Aid Society people, the BCA people, would be interested to do that.
