You know what I'm saying? So they just wasn't really making rap until, you know, Kid Frost and like Mellow Man Ace and stuff like that.

Like, you know, but, but as far as like their voice in like hip hop, as we know it, like they was just, It was listening to all of these, you know what I mean? And funk, you know what I mean? And, but yeah, but in my mind, I'm like, even, even in, if you're talking about like the gangster stuff, obviously like that always adds another element because it's just jail culture and stuff like that.

But like, but a lot of like, but for the rest of us, our lived reality was like, nah, man, they the same party we are.

and with that said we hop into our topic for this episode which is all about the latin godfather of hip-hop uh mellow man ace um who is a name i've heard of but i've never actually you know jumped into in any fashion um you know occasionally saw the escape escape from havana uh artwork in you know many you know kind of listicles and stuff like that but have just never personally gotten into mellow man ace uh in terms of his music so i know it'd be an interesting uh episode once uh ben picked it last week so uh yeah and i feel like you know i feel like that the box was ticked there in terms of interesting music but uh there's a story as always so that said ben what have you got for us

Yeah, so Mellow Man Ace is definitely a pioneer in the hip hop space and has been his whole career.

He is noted for his bilingual delivery, which was very rare in the mid to late 80s when he came to prominence.

He was born in Cuba, but left at the age of four to settle in LA in the city of Southgate.

Amazingly, he's actually a founding member of Cypress Hill.

He formed the group with his brother Sendog in 1988 and recruited DJ Muggs and B-Real.

They were initially called DVX which stood for Devastating Vocal Excellence but Mellow Man Ace had ambitions of a solo nature so he left the group soon after and began to pursue his solo career.

And I saw, like, so you got Tone, you got Marvin, you got Mellow Man Ace.

You got, like, a murderous row right out the gate.
