Mebane

October is fast approaching, and that means I'm about to be really busy with my annual library presentations.

Between Monday, October 5th, and Halloween day, I have 10 in-person talks scheduled with the Wake County Public Libraries and one with the Mebane Public Library in Mebane, North Carolina.

Finally, to Mebane, where Orange County Schools is moving ahead on plans for a new elementary school on West 10 Road that's slated to open in 2029.

Earlier this month, the Mebane City Council unanimously approved a memorandum of understanding with the school district, which could help Orange County Schools pay for the project while giving Mebane residents a new space for public use.

Here's Mebane spokesperson Kelly Hunter.

As part of the project, Orange County discussed annexing into the city of Mebane and working with our city staff to include a gymnasium that could serve elementary age students.

So with this memorandum of understanding, the city would have the opportunity to use the gym that they're building for recreational programs and helping meet the future recreation needs in our community, meaning that we could branch out and put some of our programming there as well.

There would be no immediate financial impact to the city of Mebane under this initial agreement.

However, a future agreement could provide for the city to finance a portion of the gym's construction costs, such as bleachers, lockers, and that is currently estimated at about $382,000 over 10 years using the Orange County's future financing.

Oh, yeah, we didn't even get into that.

Turning to other news, Orange County Animal Services has confirmed another positive rabies test, the sixth one this year.

This one involves a skunk that had an altercation with two dogs in Mebane.

Reminder that you do have to keep your pet's rabies vaccines updated.

That includes dogs, cats, and ferrets if you have them.
