The song was released on February 3, 2012, as the lead single from MDNA, and it features Nicki Minaj and M.I.A. At this point, that alone tells you that we're not dealing with some small, quiet rollout.

This was Madonna stepping into a new decade of pop with two artists that had completely, distinctly different energy.

They have their own fan bases and their own edge.

So when I give flowers to the song, I'm not saying it's the deepest Madonna song she ever made.

I'm saying it deserves credit for what it actually did.

It opened the chapter for MDNA.

It brought three different, totally different women in pop culture together.

None of the album's singles cracked the charts in the U.S., and just one, XXXO, went top 40 in the U.K.

In 2012, M.I.A. co-wrote a song for Madonna's album MDNA and then joined her on stage to perform it at the Super Bowl, where she controversially flipped the bird at the camera, leading the NFL to sue her for damages and demand a public apology.

Two years later, they settled out of court.

Following ever more delays, which would come to plague almost every MIA release, she released her fourth studio album, Matangi, in late 2013.
