McMillan & Wife

First ball ceremonies are about ready to get underway.

Rock Hudson, who plays the police commissioner of San Francisco in the television series McMillan & Wife, will throw out the first ball.

Gordon MacRae has sung the national anthem.

The umpires, Andy Olsen of the National League will be behind the plate.

He could be the rugged Texas rancher and giant, the tortured romantic hero in Magnificent Obsession, or the charming bachelor trading sexual innuendo with Doris Day in Pillow Talk.

By the time he successfully moved into television with McMillan and Wife in the 1970s, Hudson had achieved something few actors manage.

He had remained a beloved superstar for several generations of moviegoers and TV watchers.

But despite his enormous stature with audiences, much of what the public thought it knew about him was an illusion.
