McDonaldization

Do we care about the plants, the animals, the soils, the rivers that make up the continent? I mean, behind me I've got that, you know, picture of all the, you know, native animals looking in, you know, this is a government poster from the 1970s, you know, to an Australia taken over by the invasive species.

You know, what's happening often with invasive species, we call it the McDonaldization of landscapes.

So everywhere around the world.

The flattening of fauna.

um maybe it's a system around outbound marketing where i'm just making sure i'm really clear on what does it look like and what um messaging sequence do i want to be sending to the people in the different industries that i want to be working with so that there's a process to that outbound marketing rather than random stuff where i go oh i'm feeling really quiet at the moment um oh no what am i going to do i better start sending some emails out to people So planning around that, maybe it's planning systems around services.

So, you know, maybe we think of it as a system for like the McDonaldization, if you like, of the things that you deliver where it's like when a client submits an order, it's like taking an order for a Big Mac.

and you just work it through the process, but everything has maybe some checklists that you're checking off for your team and you're aware of the whole process because maybe there's photos, there's the floor plan, there's the video and things are going in different directions because maybe you're sending your video off to a different editor.

But maybe there's a whole lot to do there and maybe you've got some revisions to make back and forth.

And he's like, oh, there's a shift happening and I don't like it.

And so his entire ministry was not in opposition to that, but it's a clear contrast to that McDonaldization of church, right? So that's the illustration.

So this has been the critique, though, for I think the last 20 years.

This whole missional church movement that happened in the early 2000s was a direct critique of this.

There's a tendency for people to differentiate between these sort of general foundational, more varied types of activities, which are seen as intrinsically a little bit more motivating and interesting for children and learners to engage in compared to the very specific, fairly explicit, focused drills and activities that are designed, traditionally designed, you know, to this is what you do in the S&C area or whatever, or preparation for performance or whatever.

So, for example, in outdoor education, There's a lovely paper by the Irish academics, Pierce and Telford, where they talk about, they criticise the McDonaldisation of outdoor education and activities where they, essentially they're saying that people just turn the handle and they just do these same old, same old things.

And they see a lot of kids getting turned off as a result of it.

And recently, Carl Woods and colleagues have published pointed to a book by Frank and Stevens who talk about loosened logic and tightened logic.

You can't do that with a local independent.

It's the McDonaldization of home services, but in a way that actually adds value because the quality has been so hit or miss for decades.

Exactly.

And they're covering such a wide range of states now, everywhere from Arizona and Utah to Rhode Island and Delaware.

And that's the seduction of the modern era.
