See, in July of 1975, the Comorian, which I guess that's how I pronounce that in the first place, Territorial Assembly, led by Ahmed Abdallah, would go and unilaterally declare independence from France.

However, the island off of Mayotte would go and vote in favor of local referendums to retain its status as French overseas collectives, which is a move that was strongly backed by Paris to maintain an Indian Ocean naval anchorage.

Still very important for them geopolitically.

So Abdallah took a very aggressive anti-French diplomatic posture, demanding the immediate reintegration of Mayotte.

In response, Parisian back channels and Comorian political rivals turned to, can you guess it, Bob Denard.

In August of 1975, Denard organized his first Comorian coup.

This region of high pressure will drift away by this weekend, and a deep low over the northern Atlantic drives a weakening cold front south.

Seychelles is a country composed of an archipelago of around 115 islands, which is, you know, a decent amount.

The islands are located in the Indian Ocean, halfway between Somalia and Madagascar, and its nearest neighbors are the Comoros Islands, Mauritius, the French overseas departments of Mayotte and Réunion, and the capital city of Victoria is something that is located 1,500 kilometers or around 800 nautical miles east of mainland Africa.

It is the smallest country in Africa, as well as the least populated sovereign African country, with a population of just over 100,000 people in 2022.

And these 100,000 people who occupy this island are referred to as the Seychelles.

There is a coda to this that France rarely acknowledges.

In the Indian Ocean, the island of Mayotte, 97% Muslim, voted in 1975 to remain French rather than take independence.

They chose the Republic.

They chose to stay.

We may expect the daytime MUFs to increase slightly as the month progresses.
