Mayors and Independents

The Mayors and Independence Party, known in Czech as STAN, because they are starostové, so the abbreviation is STAN, but I will use the term Mayors and Independence Party.

So they won 10 of the 27 seats contested and the Mayors and Independents are considered the party that gained most.

The Civic Democrats or ODS in Czech took 7, the Christian Democrats retained their 3 seats and Top09 held on to 2.

These are the 4 parties that formed the opposition to the present government.

political party ANO failed to take a single constituency in second round run-offs to one-third of the seats in the Senate, in which the mayors and independents scored biggest.

But is ANO chairman Andrej Babiš right to call the outcome of the elections disastrous for the party? That's one of the questions of Ian Villaby for political scientist Petr Just.

Five senators secured victory outright in the first round last weekend.

The run-offs will determine whether the opposition Mayors and Independents or the governing ANO movement forms the second-largest Senate group.

The joint ODS/TOP 09 group is expected to remain the largest.

Around two point twenty-five million people are eligible to vote.

Even now, the idea of financial incentives for prevention has sparked controversy.

Some opposition politicians have described the plan as populist or risky.

Michaela Šebelová from the Mayors and Independents says this is not something she would support.

This is just another populist gimmick which will deepen the state deficit without any guarantee of bringing the desired effect.

[upbeat music] Talks on forming new coalitions are underway around the country in the wake of the weekend municipal and Senate elections.

A coalition agreement for Prague City Hall should be finalized in November, Petr Hlubáček, the capital's lead candidate for the Mayors and Independents and Prague's likely new mayor, told Czech Television.

Hlubáček said he had held a brief meeting on Sunday evening with Tomáš Portlík of the Civic Democrats, the lead candidate of the SPOLU alliance.

Formal talks are scheduled for later today, after which Hlubáček will also meet with representatives of Praha Sobě and the Pirate Party.

Portlík said on Sunday that as the winner of the municipal elections in the capital, the Mayors and Independents have the right to nominate the mayor.

[upbeat music] The National Coalition for Combating Drought will meet on Monday to assess the hydrological situation, including measures taken so far and further steps to address the ongoing extreme drought.

Prime Minister Andrej Babiš will join the experts at the meeting.

The most important [chuckles] group were independent, uh, candidates, yeah? But from the political party, ANO gained the most, uh, support, but this support were mainly in the, uh, small cities, villages, and maybe in some other cities that are also middle rank or out of, out of state.
