So I remember going to gigs back then.

Were there reggae gigs? There were some reggae gigs on, but, you know, like the first one I remember going to was, I'm not going to say the DJ's name, but he was playing like, you know, real commercial Maxi Priest and Shaggy and everything.

This was in 1997.

I remember going up and I said, do you have any like Sizzler or Bujabantin or Capleton? And they were the biggest artists in Jamaican music back then.

Maxi Priest was on the way to the studio when this one popped into his head.

When he got there, he sang bits of it to Gary Benson and Winston Seller, who immediately wanted to know where it came from.

Anyway, they laid it down and boom, goes to number one in America.

Go West were ten with The King of Wishful Thinking.

Down eight from two.

New Kids on the Block and Tonight was a part of the soundtrack of the summer of 1990.

And Close to You? Oh, yeah.

That was a jam.

He was involved with the 25th anniversary show, the historic Motown show where Michael Jackson does the moonwalk.

He's worked with the Beach Boys, with Maxi Priest, with Madness, Tina Turner, with Richard Ashcroft, Annie Lennox.

And he also moved into the world of television and he was a puppeteer on BBC's Saturday Superstore, a children's show.

And he was a puppeteer there for five years.

So this is the second and final single from Maxi Priest's album Man With The Fun.

It follows that hookup with Shaggy called That Girl that peaked at number 15 earlier in 1996, which I quite enjoyed.

Duets with Peebo Bryson and Maxi Priest kept her on the charts until the 90s, and her minimalist sounds and influences even helped create the Quiet Storm radio format.

And perhaps it was that style that made her a little bit of an afterthought in the rock world.

We lost Roberta just last year, And I agree with the obituary in the Sunday Times of London that stated, she sang with flawless diction and elegant, understated power in a voice that was soft, sensual, creating a radio-friendly crossover between jazz, R&B, and easy listening.
