Matthew 28:18

But we're going to talk about the Great Commission today.

So the Great Commission... found primarily in Matthew 28, 18 through 20.

This is typically where most people are familiar with the Great Commission.

It's reflected elsewhere as well.

Yeah.

Like still give it that weight, you know, still, you know, encourage people to regard it in that way, but don't just gloss over the difference between the Greek verbs.

So again, you have Matthew Tuesday, and then you have the direct object of that.

All the nations, it's Pantata ethne.

[gentle music] Okay, so I wanted to share today on something to do with all nations service and, uh, and Tracy's already mentioned it, but we get the idea for doing this from Matthew 28:18-20, which is the Great Commission.

And we're just gonna stand as we read the Word together today, uh, to, to honor the Word of God in our lives.

So Matthew 28:18-20.

"Then Jesus came to them and said, 'All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.

Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.

[crowd noise] Our teaching text tonight comes from Matthew 28:18-20.

"Then Jesus came to them and said, 'All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.

Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I've commanded you.

The first key is identity.

Jesus starts the Great Commission with an identity statement.

Matthew 28:18, "Then Jesus came to them and said, 'All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.'" Jesus knew who He was and whose He was.

He belongs to the Father.

He's a son.

And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not as a result of works, so that no one may boast.

Matthew 28:18-20: And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.

Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to follow all that I commanded you.

And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age." Psalm 9:7-8: The Lord reigns forever; he has established his throne for judgment.

For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing.

It is the gift of God, not as a result of works, so that no one may boast.

Yeah.

So we are called to fulfill the Great Commission, which is found in Matthew 28,

through 20.

But we are called to proclaim, preserve, and display the gospel.

Proclaim is, you know, tell others about Jesus.

Like, you know, the Great Commission, as I already said, Matthew 28, 18 through 20.

Protect the Bible is preserve.

Our opening reading is taken from Matthew 28, 18.

And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.

Matthew 28, 18.

Pastor Chris says, When the Lord Jesus declared, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth, he made a proclamation no earthly ruler could ever truthfully make.

Throughout history, mighty empires arose with extraordinary influence and vast dominions.

"So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us.

God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him." Matthew 28:18-20.

"And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, 'All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.

Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to follow all that I commanded you.

He was crushed for our iniquities.

Upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed.

Matthew six thirty-one to thirty-three.

Do not worry then, saying, "What are we to eat?" Or, "What are we to drink?" Or, "What are we to wear for clothing?" For the Gentiles eagerly seek all these things, for your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things.

When the Holy Spirit comes, you can now go out.

It says, "And Jesus came and said to them, 'All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me.'" All authority.

Now, authority is simply legal rights.
