It's really distributed.

One, there are things in Python, in R, in MATLAB, right? But the software infrastructure, especially a couple of years ago, even for the simple variations was basically non-existent and the kinds of experimental papers that dealt with such variations on these models were very, very sparse.

Very, very few publications, even though there were quite a few theoretical papers that clearly established interest in those models.

And we, through our eyes, it looked like this was all just coming from the lack of analytical convenience.

What's declining? We've got Ruby, we've got Scala, we've got Perl, PHP, MATLAB, Swift in a weird way.

Scala is the clearest decline case in the Hosky data.

When we say a language is declining, we usually mean new projects aren't choosing it.

The existing code keeps running, keeps getting patched, keeps making money.

MATLAB is an interesting one because it's not a general-purpose language at all.

It's a domain language for engineers and scientists, and it just fell out of the TIOB top twenty for the first time in over a decade.

One of the things about Geoff is that he was coding himself on MATLAB and running his own things.
