War enabled the Republicans to pass sweeping visionary legislation born of a certain worldview.

And that worldview basically is captured in what the economists of the time, political economists of the time, like Matthew Carey and others, called harmony of interest.

This is the idea that in a capitalist economy you could labor and capital into harmony, if you kept labor free and the economy free all at the same time, it was the belief that labor and capital could be friends.

It also depended on an activist interventionist federal government, and that is exactly what the Republicans created, in part out of necessity of the war and in part out of the fact that they And it's going to bring about a great deal of constitutional innovation and economic experimentation.

The ladies in the house on Packa Street were religious in all but the name.

Their number had been increased by the arrival of Maria Murphy, niece of the illustrious Matthew Carey, the first publisher of the Douay Bible in the United States, champion of Irish rights and one of the ablest publicists of the time.

Then Mary Ann Butler and Susan Clossey arrived from New York and joined the little band.

They were soon followed by Rose White and Catherine Mullen.

He was a living in the area of Philadelphia.

His father, most notably, was named Matthew Carey.

He was born in Dublin, Ireland.

And it's important to talk about his father because these men really act as a duo as they cross through the 19th century.

And so Matthew Carrier was born in the 18th century in Dublin, Ireland.

And as a young man, he became part of the revolutionary milieu that was going on in Ireland at the time.

And of course, this was a swirl of milieus that was going on, let's say, France and the revolutionary zeitgeist of France.

And even that was a tremendous work.

Um, he ended up residing in the United States and he happened to reside in, um, Pennsylvania, which was basically the hub of protectionist thought at the time.

He became acquainted with the likes of Matthew Carey, the father of Henry Carey and various other protectionists, then Raymond and that.

Um, And he took a lot of these protectionist ideas back to Europe, and Germany ended up adopting heavy protectionist policies, arguably through the influence of List.

Then, of course, you had... you know, the Asian tigers and Japan also adopt these, uh, protectionist policies.

well uh What you tend to have is, in my book, I identify four generations of protectionists.

The first one's to do with Alexander Hamilton.

The second one's to do with Daniel Raymond, Matthew Carey.

Then the third generation relates to Henry Charles Carey.
