This is a movie podcast where we have conversations about film that one of us has chosen.

This week we're doing the 2005 Match Point directed by Woody Allen.

I have not seen this movie.

In 06, she's in Scoop, the obviously beloved Woody Allen film, Black Dahlia, and The Prestige.

And in 05, it's Match Point and The Island.

So she's kind of in this weird post, you know, Lost in Translation, it girl phase of being in stuff.

Right.

like good in good company a movie that i kind of enjoy but you know

it's her character though is the most absolutely like makes no sense character in that movie where it's just like what is what is she actually doing in there beyond just sort of like being a you know a fulcrum point for these other two characters it's crazy uh

yeah i like and it's it's easy to forget this but she had some buzz on match point where people were like oh she's really good in match she's like and people like she's woody allen's new music she got a

golden globe nomination yeah she

That there...

And, and Match Point is about kind of the same thing.

But it's a promise that if you look at the art-

Yeah

... people.

There, there are some films, there was, I think it was Match Point where Scarlett Johansson has an amazing flat in London, and she's a waitress.

And you're just like, "Now, this is genuinely..." There are film, like, they usually find a way to kind of go, "Oh, by the way, this house is much nicer than it should be because of X, Y, or Z." But in that you're like, you're literally just doing, you've got this beautiful floor-to-ceiling windows, and it's so beautifully furnished, and you don't earn any money at all, and there is no backstory telling us that you earn a load of money.

People used to say this about the Home Alone family and say, "Oh, they wouldn't live in that house." But it's like the Home Alone family are in...

Brad? It's your choice.

We're doing Match Point.

So, yeah, it's a good movie.

Allen, you

know, even acknowledging that they might not be great, Woody Allen in particular might not be a great man, but Match Point is a bop.

It's a great film.

We've been talking about it a lot

You know, he was, uh, very photogenic.

Uh, and it was like he was on the rise.

He was showing that he was a good actor as well.

So it was kinda like the doors were kind of primed to open for him to be up to that next tier, and then I think maybe personal circumstances led him down, well, led him to a different, uh, career direction.
