Matariki

looks great, that one, doesn't it? So we've got three major kaupapa here.

STORY XIII.

THE STAR HUNT Matariki was a sky fairy.

His duty was to keep his star shining brightly that it might light up the earth at night.

So well did he love his star.

He wished the people of the earth to be always praising the beauty of the trees that he had made.

In his eyes nothing could compare with them.

Yet here were the foolish people gazing past his trees at Matariki's star.

Okay, if you could get rid of one of the following public holidays, which one would it be? Labor Day, Matariki, Anzac Day, Waitangi Day.

Please remember the significance of each of these public holidays.

I said Labor Day because I actually don't know what we're celebrating.

That's pretty good.

I like that, but it's still not more important than Matariki or Waitangi Day.

Someone said get rid of Anzac Day.

I hadn't been up there for ages.

And so we decided to go up there one Matariki weekend a few years ago and take all this exit mould and bleach spray and... scrubbers and had a go at cleaning all the mould off the inside of the hut and then Paul went back and did the mattresses a few months later when it was warmer weather and as we were coming back down we noticed that the field hut wasn't in very

well

yeah the paint's all peeling off the windows and stuff and the centenary's coming up so we decided let's try and do something about that so we weren't going to paint the whole thing but we decided to do the windows first because they looked the worst and and that took quite a few it's quite a fiddly job they're like wooden windows with about six panes and lots of little wooden beading and the paint's all peeling off and mold on the outside of the hut and all that so yeah quite a few day trips to go up and do a bit of that at a time and um gradually go and then we painted the inside of the downstairs walls and then we decided to paint the outside of the hut as well so one thing led to another and yeah that's good

Enterprise Dunedin is the economic development agency for the city.

So we're a department of the council, and our team includes the wonderful people that put together all the major city events that run, like Matariki we've just recently had, lots coming up over summer.

We have the city destination marketing team who are promoting us into the visitor economy.

And we have the team that I'm happy enough to be the team leader of with an economic development.

And there are moments where we're around the dinner table and there's someone there who might be sharing something really vulnerable, people who we've had experiences, people from different gangs, having a beautiful reconciling conversation around our dinner table.

We had a Matariki celebration down at our community centre and seeing people deeply engaging with with wanting to put their prayers in a prayer box, feasting together.

So I think I feel a great deal of hope where I see there's the kingdom.

It's not quite yet, but there's a glimpse of it.

Well, people are really enjoying it and they're loving the digital labels because they can get really close up and see the details.

We've found that people are loving the Matariki badges, the first badges made in 2022 when Matariki became a public holiday.

We've got a lovely set of those badges on display.

People are loving that badge-encrusted pennant I mentioned.
