Today, my guest is Professor Dr.

Mark Brown, one of the original members of the Mahara project team when he was at Massey University in Oteroa.

Recently, he gave us a brief overview of the early days of Mahara at Mahara Hui Online.

Now I'd also like to capture some of his wisdom and insights and also recollections here on the podcast for everybody to hear.

And with that background, I've always been driven throughout my career and over my professional life by the goal of promoting wider access and more flexible pathways to education and lifelong learning.

I originally trained as a primary school teacher and quickly progressed to being a graduate assistant, an assistant lecturer, and then a full-time university lecturer, primarily working in the field of educational technology.

In 2006, I was seconded from my lecturing role in the College of Education to the dark side of university management, or what I prefer to say, leadership at Massey University.

Initially, I served as the director of distance education with strategic oversight for Massey's 17,000 distance learners.

But then the global financial crisis reset the rules.

Funding disappeared, and you might have noticed Massey University closing their entire faculty.

So things have changed since, and I thought, okay, I need to find something else.
