Welcome to The Glory of the Mass, a weekly program devoted to beautiful sacred music performed as part of the Catholic liturgy.

I'm your host, Terry Ross, and in today's program, we'll concentrate on music for a special day, the Solemnity of Christ the King.

A Solemnity is an especially holy feast day.

It was as recently as 1925 that Pope Pius XI put it in place.

Welcome to the Glory of the Mass, a weekly program devoted to beautiful sacred music performed as part of the Catholic liturgy.

I'm your host, Terry Ross, and in today's program, we'll turn to a format that I introduced in July in which I'd like to make an occasional feature of the Glory of the Mass, namely a focus on a particular composer for all the masses of the calendar month.

This month, the month of October, I found five masses by Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina.

In fact, some of them even continued to write it.

Bach was commissioned to write Masses.

Yes.

The Mass in B minor was written by a Lutheran, and it's a magnificent piece of work.
