Mason City

Been on the pro tour here for, I think, eight or nine years, trying to just raise some high-quality show steers and good breeding heifers and replacement stock.

Originally from Mason City, Iowa, a little ways away, but kind of working with our in-laws here and trying to grow this deal.

So 2025.

Some success stories, I guess.

And at about 9.35 on the morning of February 3rd, he spotted the wreckage of the plane.

It had crashed in an open field about five miles or eight kilometers northwest from the airport they took off from in Mason City, Iowa.

To quote the FAA report, quote, All occupants had been fatally injured and the aircraft was completely destroyed.

The field in which the aircraft was found was level and covered with about four inches of snow.

Right now in the Des Moines metro, we have 60 degrees.

Norwalk 61, Marshalltown 58, Spirit Lake 62, and Mason City 57 degrees.

I'm part of the problem because I used to live in Mesa.

I grew up in Mason city.

Right.

Like my mom grew up in a super duper small town.

I grew up in Mason city.

And it's like, as soon as I had the opportunity to leave, like I skipped town and went to Des Moines.

Right.

Tell me a little bit about where you grew up and any creative pursuits you had as a child.

Well, I grew up in Mason City, Iowa, north central Iowa.

a town of about 30,000, and it was a lovely place to grow up.

It had a small art museum, so the arts were appreciated in the town.

Bernie was dipping it.

And one of the steps was to mix the vat up.

And then they were just laying these little bits of printed paper tissue into the pulp and they didn't want to mix it in they wanted them to actually be floating so um you know it's this process and so I helped lay these tissues in and and we talked and and then um lo and behold Howie asked the question about my background and they were they were interested that I'd gone to college and everything but the the golden thing that they loved was that I had in high school, my summer job in Mason City, there was a Libby Owens Ford thermopane glass factory.

And

One of them is one that I mentioned earlier called Northwestern Steakhouse.

It's up in Mason City, Iowa, kind of in the northern part of the state, and they have been in operation for, oh gosh, it was 100 years in 2020, so 106 years, and they by the same family the entire time.

They're a little bit of a kind of an interesting bend on a supper club.

They could also be kind of categorized as like a Greek steakhouse, but really have that sort of classic vibe to them.

It's very tasty.

But that one is really neat and has a really cool community story.

They started as kind of a lunch counter restaurant for immigrants working in the cement factories in Mason City and have kind of moved to, oh gosh, I don't remember, and they've been in their current space for quite a long time, but into an old neighborhood grocery store.

And so they really are one of the few spots that we have that are like nestled kind of smack dab in the middle of a neighborhood.
