[upbeat music] Welcome back to Conversations with Chrissy, the Maryland MVA's podcast that we explore issues related to Marylanders and driving safely.

Today we're discussing Senate Bill 111, a bill that was recently enacted by the Maryland legislature and signed into law by Governor Wes Moore.

Beginning October 1, 2026, new measures will help ensure that Marylanders properly register their vehicles here in Maryland.

If your vehicle is registered in another state, the law provides vehicle owners with a grace period to transfer their title and registration to the Maryland MVA and ensure that your vehicle record is accurate.

At m.mva, we're serious about safety and ensuring that drivers are held to the same standards and that law enforcement has access to the information they need to ensure we're safe on Maryland roadways.

There's one notable exception is if the guy is paying interest every day then it's the best idea to deal with it as soon as possible.

Meaning, I don't know if you ever, for instance, forgot to return your tags to the MVA when you canceled your insurance.

These things... every day there's like another fee that adds up.

In like two months, you owe $650.

Lap, what's up, dude?

Hey, what's up, D-Mess? What's up, JP? What up, brother? Man, I'm going to say bleep the PG County police and bleep the MVA, bro.

I had these tickets, and I'm trying to, you know, renew my registration.

So you're going to charge me an MVA fee? registration fee on top of the tickets that I owe.

And then the tickets, they charge a fee.

You know what I'm saying? If it's late now, it's my fault for that.

Make it make sense.

Despite the fact that the MVA data will be used to identify EBUs, the model contract prohibits states from sharing data related to citizenship.

The ERIC model contract provides that, quote, under no circumstances shall the member transmit an individual's record where the record contains documentation or other information indicating that the individual is a non-citizen of the United States, end quote.

Brian, would you like to comment?

When Governor Moore came in, he did maintain several of the heads of agencies, if not secretaries, but let's say within the various departments.

Let's say MDOT, Department of Transportation, you know, you have in there MVA.

We deal with MVA.

We deal with MTA, mass transit, because we have our own buses, 92 buses that go to four of our school campuses, which is something that our office, you know, operates and, you know, liaises.

So a lot of those people were still there.

MVA, what's your connection with that? So, I mean, just again, constituent services is as active as we are legislatively, we are as equally if not more active on the constituent service fronts, meaning everybody has government in their lives in umpteen different ways.

And when things don't work or there's a problem with government...

One of my favorite stories is one day we sold a vehicle to somebody and the issue date of a driver's license was 1-1.

And I kind of said to somebody, if you look at something like that, right, those are those little telltale things that no MVA or DMV or any other organization that issues driver's licenses is open on 1-1.

So if that's the date that it was issued, it's probably not a real driver's license.

Those are the kinds of things you want to train people on.

And

is that also the cornerstone to warning signs that dealers should look for? When you have those processes in place, does that make it easier when a situation does become or does arise? And is there a time and place that they should be contacting or raising that?

Yeah, hopefully it's happening across the board, right? Hopefully if the process is in place where you start with a sales associate, then a sales manager is looking at it, then a GM is looking at it, then an F&I person is looking at it, then maybe you have a central accounting office that's then sending it regulatorily over to your DMV or your MVA.

At every step of the way, if the process is similar and if the process is being followed, then at every point somebody has a responsibility to try to catch something.

It's just one of those things that you go, "Really?" Anyway, that is, uh, what is happening with the Secret Service.

State Senator JB Jennings, many time guest on our show, Brian, Republican from Baltimore County, got a couple of calls from constituents that made him call the Motor Vehicle Administration-

I found myself back at the motherfucking grocery store twice.

You know how you be like, "Y'all, I'm just dealing with a bunch of bullshit." Like, I got to ride to the MVA.

I'm dreading it.

Yeah.

Hell no.

I feel like the most of the shit that don't get done by motherfuckers in the MVA or the DMV...

It's actually DMV that I go now.

I don't live in Maryland no more.
