Mary Sheffield

Mayor of Detroit, Michigan

Oct 16, 2026

57:31
What is your role? What do you know about the Goodfellows?
57:34
Well, I know that they are wrapping their arms around our children here in the City of Detroit, and really, Southeast Michigan, in providing, uh, gift packages for families that may be in need, uh, throughout the holiday season.
57:46
And I, I just can't, you know, express how important it is that all of our children in Detroit feel protected, uh, especially during the Christmas season, when oftentimes it's, it's difficult for families to be able to provide, uh, all that our children may need.
57:59
So it's just an honor to be here, to know that this organization is providing that type of support and care for our families and children here in the City of Detroit.
59:03
Um, what are you most proud of that has happened in this year?
59:06
You know, so much.
59:07
Um, you know, we had a very ambitious transition, um, period where we had over 9,000 Detroit residents help shape our agenda for my first year.
59:16
And we've been able to accomplish things like Rx Kids, where families, pregnant mothers are receiving access to funding throughout the most critical times of pregnancy and the first six months of life, of a child's life.

9:33
you process and deal with the really horrible things that you have to get involved with and, you know, knowing that a family has lost somebody at the end of the day?
9:46
As the leader of the city, I take it very personal when there is a tragedy in our city, what more we could have done to address it.
9:53
And I always say, while we have record low crime in Detroit, even today, year to date, we're still trending low.
9:59
One life loss is still too many.
10:01
Through prayer, through stillness, I just try not to internalize things too much, but try to be effective in the policies that we push forward to prevent tragedies from taking place.
10:11
Detroit, listen up.
10:13
We are committed to prevention, supporting our young people and creating safe spaces for them to enjoy their summer.
12:27
I'm particularly interested in the impact your father and grandfather had on you and on the city and how that's really helped you become who you are.
2:14
Please join me in welcoming our mayor, Mary Shuffle.
2:20
Thank you.
2:21
Thank you, Director Kramer.
2:22
Good morning, everyone.
2:25
I am truly excited and pleased to be with you all today to celebrate a great day for DDOT, for our drivers, for our mechanics, and ultimately for the riders of this system.
2:37
Public transportation, we know, is a lifeline in our city.
2:41
A million riders a month depend on DDOT to get to and from work.
