Why? Because there were black students in college and universities who, by that time, had started reading the Journal of African Civilizations and other African-centered writers and started challenging their professors there in class.

The most famous example is Mary Lefkowitz at Wellesley, but others like her.

And so now... uh, these, uh, the established majority professoriate, as we can call it, could see that the so-called tiger was at the gate.

Then that's when they, uh, marshaled their forces such as they were to attack, uh, the African centered, uh, uh, paradigm as well as the scholars themselves.
