What did you do that's different than what's been done before?

In 2020, we made an experiment at Svalbard where we were able to reproduce the vocalization of a blue whale from a fiber optic cable that was buried one meter below the seabed.
4:30
And when a fin whale crossed the fiber, we could recognize that this is most likely a fin whale.
4:36
Two years later, we used this to track the whales so that we can actually find out how they are moving over months, over some hours, seasonal changes, et cetera.
4:47
When they are diving, then normally they don't vocalize.
4:50
Then we cannot track them.

So we got gaps in the data where we had to fix that by mathematical methods to find out that this is probably the same whale again.

What were you able to detect?
