Why Them?

9:37
So, uh, please correct me if I've, uh, generally summarized this improperly, and tell us why snowbirds with Florida connections should be paying attention.
9:46
Well, any other year, or other than this year, maybe the year before, we would look at this with very little concern at all because, you know, you'd say, "That's fine.
9:56
If you're a Florida resident, you're what's called a homesteader.
9:59
If they give you a tax relief on property tax, so be it.
10:02
And Canadians don't get it, understand." But here's the problem.
10:05
There's such a issue now with relations in general between Canada and the US that everything that happens there now you take a little personal.
10:14
So the bottom line is, yes, the Americans are gonna get, or I should say, the Florida residents are gonna get a significant, uh, tax decrease on their property tax.
10:46
How might this move impact the value of one's Florida property, uh, even if, uh, say, you, you aren't intending to sell it anytime soon?
3:25
Uh, what's the story behind that?
3:27
Yeah, that's, that's scary because of course, you know, it's a loan.
3:31
It's gotta be paid back.
3:32
So yes, it's needed now because they're losing tremendous amounts of money now based on the cost of fuel.
3:38
So they need this.
3:40
Now, the problem is, is there any light at the end of this tunnel where they're gonna be able to, uh, start making money again, and, uh, will the fuel prices go down? But ultimately, it's gotta be paid back, and th-this is the big question.
3:53
Will the smaller airlines be able to survive under these conditions of higher fuel prices, cheaper tickets, and less people flying? So the combination of all three could be a disaster for the smaller airlines, no doubt.
5:01
Uh, so, uh, where would you be going? If you wanted a deal, where, you know, where's the hot spots right now?
7:08
But for those who gambled and lost their flights, what is the protocol for them?
7:13
So now, as we said, they had their choice.
7:16
And I've been saying this for weeks.
7:18
Anybody who had a time-sensitive trip, in other words, you had to get to a wedding, you had to get to a cruise ship that was departing, a business meeting, you had no choice but to take the refund or credit and look for alternative arrangements.
7:32
With that, other travel experts suggest you then gave the airline the opportunity to not have to look after any costs that you incurred.
7:40
But at the end of the day, you could not wait for Saturday or Sunday to get news that your flight was canceled and that you then would have 48 hours, or I should say they would, to find you another flight because you would have missed the wedding, you would have missed the cruise ship and so on.
7:55
So with that in mind, what we're left now is people who waited for the cancellation notice and now hoping to find another flight within 48 hours.
9:59
Now for those passengers who had all kinds of insurance, how has their journey been different or better?
1:21
Now, if my flight was canceled this, uh, BC Day long weekend, what am I, um, what am I entitled to under Canada's Air Passenger Protection Rules?
1:31
Yeah, this is gonna be the, the argument that's gonna go on for a long time.
1:36
Now, theoretically, um, the reason I say theoretically is 'cause it didn't work with the Air Canada strike, so I'm not sure why it's gonna work for the West- WestJet one.
1:45
But what they have to do if they canceled it, which meant you didn't cancel it before they did, 'cause evidently, and I'm not an expert in that area, but if you re- ask for a refund or a credit and cancel your flight before they do, then they owe you nothing from a compensation perspective.
2:03
So let's answer your question, which is you did nothing, and now you found out your flight was canceled.
2:10
They have to find you alternative flight within 48 hours on w- what the w- they worded as one of their air- airlines.
2:18
Well, they're, they're, they're on strike, so it couldn't have been that, so it would be a partner airline or a competitor airline.
2:51
So, um, i- if they tell you a strike, uh, is pending and potentially could happen, there is some onus on, on the, on the traveler to, to try to make, uh, changes, uh, a- and they feel that they're not accountable for that?
46:18
Does travel insurance typically cover disruptions related to war or sort of fuel-driven airline changes?
46:24
Yeah, so th- th- this is new territory we're in right now, and my advice to all is to check with the broker or the insurer that you're, you're booking through that exact question you asked.
46:36
My take on it is there are some insurers who will cover situations like this until such time that they call it a known cause and take that off the table.
46:46
What I mean by that is if our government were to call a level three travel advisory or four, which is avoid all non-essential travel or avoid all travel, which they have to many of these countries in the Middle East right now, then you can't make a claim and say, "Uh, I didn't make that cruise because the plane got canceled because of fuel issues because of the war." The minute it's linked to that, it's not available, so you're buying it for all the other reasons.
47:13
You getting sick, a traveling companion, or a family member.
47:16
So be wary.
47:17
You need to ask an individual insurer.
47:33
Now, if the clo- conflict drags on for months, uh, two, three, four months, could we see airlines reduce routes or capacity to control costs?
