He burst into the room, threw the script down on the table and yelled, who wrote this crap? Burroughs instantly knew they had found their Louis.

When Burroughs was developing Fraser as a spin-off from Cheers, he envisioned the erudite Fraser Crane living with his blue-collar father, Martin Crane.

There was only one problem.

Fraser's father had been killed off in Season 9 of Cheers.

So Burroughs and the writers had to figure out a way to get past that little problem.

So in one episode of Fraser, Sam Malone from Cheers comes to visit Fraser Crane in Seattle and meets Fraser's father.

He pulls Fraser aside and says, You told me your dad was dead.

To which Fraser replies, I lied.

So I do think that every time I hear it.

But I also think of the Fraser Crane episode where Marty Crane is watching an American version of the Antiques Roadshow.

And every time they say venue, he has to have like a swig of beer.

And so every time I hear pivot, pivot, pivot in a conversation, I just feel like I need to be knocking back a bit.

And when it starts out, his father, Martin, moves in with him and he's not getting around so well because he was shot in the hip or the leg like a couple of years before the start of the show.

So that puts Martin Crane being shot in 1991.

And there's an episode of Frasier called The Return of Martin Crane.

They have a flashback to the day that Martin got shot.

Yeah, Martin, he's getting around well enough that he's taking a job as a security guard

Yeah.

... um, Frasier's dad in Frasier.

Have you learned anything from Martin Crane regarding fatherhood, would you say?

You know, part of the reason I think my wife got into that section of the show, the reason why that section is so ripe is because Niles and Daphne play romance so wonderfully.

And for a guy who is in so many relationships... who we do root for for a time, Kelsey Grammer and Frasier, they're not romantic heroes.

Or there's like an episode where they all spend New Year's Eve together.

They like put tuxes on, they put the dog in a tux and then they have to get to Canada.

I don't remember the details, but just to say yes it is really beautiful to see them oh my goodness don't don't get me started about the finale like i all right so we gotta keep moving so i don't start thinking of all of the the greatest fraser moments of all time um so yes i would say martin crane is not a perfect father But I also don't think there is a perfect father.

And I think the best you can hope for is that you are a person who can acknowledge your faults and have an openness to changing.

There are certainly certain, let's say, prisms through which our history has been shown to people, and some of those are reflective of goodness, some aren't.

And we're looking for a way to actually introduce people who don't know or reacquaint those who once knew about the greatness of the founding fathers and where they're really coming from and what their motivations were.

And to paint the idea that maybe The founding fathers are basically us, that we aren't that removed from them, that we have the same desires, same hopes for a better place, a better government, a better world in which to live.

And so that's my dedication to this.

This is how I got involved with the Opus guys.

I remember being on air at CNN and being disgusted.

I think Rolling Stone did a cover on these guys, making them look like rock stars.

And I'm like, what is happening to society when people blow up innocent people or murder husbands and fathers in the street because they don't like the jobs that they do running healthcare companies? Or, you know, they kill three children because they're disturbed.
