Marta Ribó

The Honga volcano near Tonga produced the most explosive eruption of the last century, and its impact was so strong, it deepened the surrounding seafloor by more than 700 metres.

The massive eruption and its after-effects have continued to be studied by scientists from around the world, including Maringia scientist Dr Marta Ribo from AUT, who's led work on the seafloor changes.

Compared with pre-eruption data, Marta and her team found the seafloor had dropped from 150 metres down to 850 metres.

There was also 8.9 cubic kilometres of displaced material.

As well as asking the questions you'd expect, I'll be throwing some random ones at our guests just to see what secrets I can reveal.

Joining me today is Senior Lecturer in Marine Geosciences, Dr Marta Ribó.

Marta is originally from Spain and is an internationally renowned marine geoscientist whose research has focused primarily on understanding seabed geomorphology, hydrodynamic and sedimentary processes and seafloor characterisation.

She has participated in more than 20 oceanographic surveys across Aotearoa, New Zealand, Tonga and Spain.
